Our Big Dreams
The mission of Víðarrheim Abbey is to orient, equip, and set loose the newest faces in the Hearthlands. Life at Víðarrheim Abbey is multi-faceted and suitable for some, but we can't guarantee it will be to every person's liking.
If your aspirations pull you in a different direction, you are not obliged to stay. We will gladly introduce you to one of our local and growing communities.
If you want to stay with Víðarrheim, there are numerous roles and objectives to fulfill at the Abbey!
Indeed, Víðarrheim Abbey is a local supplier of agricultural goods. What we don't use or sell to sustain ourselves, we give as charity to surrounding communities. Further, we specialize in the creation of high quality runed dolmen. What righteous reprisal cannot be exacted with a nidbane, we have our huscarls. Devoted to defense, we aspire to maintain security locally. We do not start conflicts, we end them.
If these sorts of activities interest you, inspect the roles below—life at Víðarrheim Abbey might be for you.
Acolyte As an acolyte in the abbey, you will discover what you want to do in and around Víðarrheim. You may not yet own land, but may possess private storage and access to some amenities. You will receive special attention from instructors around Víðarrheim Abbey. Your routine around the Abbey is that of a learner.
When you are comfortable with your knowledge, you may choose a path described below.
Monk As a monk, you have decided that you do not want to own land. You are devoted to helping your community. Your routine revolves around the trade of your choice. You may choose to aid a primary production. You may also decide to spearhead other productions, for which we may gather to build an infrastructure.
Yeoman As a yeoman, you are quintessentially a citizen as might be expected in other villages. You may own land, and little is expected from you. To most communal locations, you are a guest. Your routine revolves around the furthering of your personal goals. You colonize around the Abbey, not for communal living, but for the protection from its huscarls and the company from its people.
Steward As a steward, you are a civic leader at Víðarrheim Abbey. Your role is primarily that of a merchant. You handle the import and export of goods to the Abbey. Additionally, you may oversee certain productions. The tools available to you include the ability to oath newcomers, banish troublemakers, and claim land.
Huscarl As a huscarl of Víðarrheim, you are a protector. With your oath, you are held to a higher standard. In conflicts, you take the high road. You do not lower yourself to holding grudges and feuding. Your interests are in the safety of the community in and around Víðarrheim Abbey, and as such, you will be trained, fed, and equipped with the resources to settle conflicts.
Thane As a thane, you are a military leader at Víðarrheim Abbey. You earned this role as being an exemplary huscarl. You can rally your huscarls preceding, during, and after conflicts. You're an advocate for the Abbey's interests. Tools available to you are the ability to oath newcomers, banish troublemakers, and claim land.
Chief Earned through your exploits as either a steward or thane, you've become a chief. You're a top leader at Víðarrheim Abbey. Your daily routine is to collaborate with other leaders, and ensure that all things at Víðarrheim run smoothly. Your efforts at Víðarrheim Abbey revolve around making the day-to-day experiences fun and enjoyable for the community. Organize events and confer awards for great achievements.
Víðarrheim Abbey is meant to be a great place, and you do what you can to make it so.
Milestones
At Víðarrheim Abbey, we never want the group experience to stagnate. Below are several goals, each of which we tackle as a community.
• Accept 20 newcomers. • Create sketchbook designs for ranks & achievements in Víðarrheim. • Create & stock the Víðarrheim marketplace. • Beautify Víðarrheim Abbey. • Create fair rules for all residents. • Dig, dig, dig.
How to Join
You can, A. Give me a PM , or B. make a reply to this thread.
Your message should describe your interest in joining Víðarrheim Abbey. I will reply with more precise information on how to join.
Depending on how you want to join—with a new character or an existing one, steps to joining will be different.
I quite like the ideas surrounding your Abbey, but I have some questions about execution. Do you have playtime regulations? Do you require voice chat? How long is the average acolyte an acolyte? What manner of productions do you have up and running and what would you like to have up and running?
But before I get into answering, have a promotional image!

We do not require a minimum amount of hours a week. You may approach membership in this group as casually or hardcore as suits you.
However, when you assume the role of a Thane, Steward, or Chief, there is expected activity. These are leadership roles, and as such, these leaders need to have a presence.
Question #2
Georgicus132 wrote:Do you require voice chat?
We do not require voice chat, though, when on group outings we encourage you join us on our mumble server. It is usually prudent that you can at least hear your companions who do have a microphone.
Instead of Skype, which is popular here, we use Slack for out-of-game communication. We find it is has just the right amount of bells & whistles we want in a chat service.
Question #3
Georgicus132 wrote:How long is the average acolyte an acolyte?
Your transition from acolyte to any other role is contingent on your understanding of the role you desire..
You may join knowing that you want to be a fighter, and play in the role of a Huscarl, but upon joining, I would ask you patiently learn the expectations we have for that role. Once you hear some finer details, once you see our primary location, you may change your mind on how you want to fit into this group!
I have created some roles to appeal to certain types of players I've met over the years. For instance, I never fail to encounter your traditional communal player, and to this regard, if you are defined by this quality most, the role of a "Monk" might best suit you. As a counterbalance, I've also created the role of the "Yeoman." This appeal often to the type of player who often values their independence and individual grit, more than anything.
Upon your arrival, I or someone else will give you a tour. I'll see if you have any questions, and from then on—if you wish to remain an "Acolyte (unsure of what you want to do in the future)," then you will be set to share a plot with a player who has chosen to play in the Abbey as a "monk." Your relationship may evolve into that of a student and teacher. The monks you meet will show you the ropes.
In this dynamic, we hope you'll feel comfortable to fail!
The hearthlands are intimidating, and we want to give you the courage to face it!
Question #4
Georgicus132 wrote:What manner of productions do you have up and running and what would you like to have up and running?
The initial arrivals to this area, myself among them, produce something from every industry—that said, I would never say we have every industry covered.
Looking toward the future, especially with plans of growth, it is my belief you can never have too many redundant producers. If you want to hunt, and we have 10 hunters, forget about them and focus on you! If you enjoy the activity, we don't want to dissuade you from exploring it.
That said, what I personally want up and running is not anything material. Most of all, I want this group up and running. I want Víðarrheim Abbey to become something that is self-propelling. What this requires is cooperation. It requires a community—thus, what I do, I do to foster a solid community that begins here: upon the foundation of this post and the in-game facilities some vets and I created.
There is no assurance the dream of this Abbey will succeed.
As we've discovered, playing this game for several years—community, cooperation, civil-civilization are not, any of them, inevitable. These are things which you must strive for, headlong, with forethought and determination.
To this point, I've put a lot of consideration into our primary location, and hope that the foundation we laid will propel us to something very interesting and fun!
Thanks for your great questions, Georgicus, and I hope to see you playing with us!
I'd like to take the steps to join the Abbey. I am friendly, easy going, and am fairly acquainted with the game (though, with a good bit to learn still).

(If I were not already leading my own, I would join your village in a heartbeat. Shh.)
Thank you for the compliments, Neon.
You should send me a PM. Perhaps we can work out some arrangement where both our communities can interact.
Promotional Imagery! Below, a few of us decided to make our knarr into a fishing vessel.
While I'm fishing—this is the best time to talk to me and ask me questions about the Abbey!
We've had a number of acolytes pass through Viðarrheim.
While some wish to stay at their station and learn a little more before deciding where they go, a few acolytes have decided to become monks of the Abbey, and remain as permanent tenders of its grounds and newcomers.
I want to thank absolutely everyone who has joined the Abbey to this day—as well as a 'thank you' to those who have reached out to become closer partners in the culmination of Viðarheim's successes.
Every new face that visits the marble steps of the Abbey, has, and continues to be a refreshing experience for myself. Your comments, which I receive on the planning, execution, and added purpose to your playtime, exceed the feedback I hoped to receive at the inception of this project!
A big THANK YOU!
Every one of you who immigrates to the Viðarrheim, adds to the exciting player-driven narrative of this game. Though we are small now, I see no sign of us stopping—
Just last night, I had the enjoyable experience of helping, yet another, secure their entire wealth beneath the shaded walls of Viðarrheim.
After scheduling a trip—a knarr, which I thought I would use for the trading of dozens of goods, was used instead as a vehicle for recovery:
It is a pleasure to see that individuals continue finding trust and enjoyment through the experience at Viðarrheim.
Even this weekend, we plan to send two knarrs out to relocate a village nearer to the bustling domain of Viðarrheim!
I find it unclear if moves like these would place Viðarrheim among the most successful raiders, but I think we've achieved a very successful pattern: where hermits and villages alike, offer up—not only their accumulated wealth, but also their added service into the community and prosperity of Viðarrheim!
Remember, you too can join the experience at Viðarrheim Abbey. Whether you have long been settled, like the folks above, or a fresh baby-eyed hearthling, there is so much to experience as you pass through Viðarrheim and its communities.
