We can try to design mechanics that don't lend themselves to botting. Things involving goal-setting and prioritization in complex decision trees and whatnot. We can, however, not control how the user generates valid-as-such game input. I am not in control of your computer.

Of course you're not, even though there are ways to slyly detect if a person might be playing in an automated way, I can see why you don't want to spend resources on that. But spending resources on entertaining, refreshing and otherwise thought-provoking, plan-requiring things that might also go hand in hand with the prevention of botting seems like a win-win deal to me as an amateur developer*.

Half the point of the lighting would be to make torch/candle consumption a thing, right, but as for atmosphere, dawn/dusk/night sprites for objects would work too. Eye strain is the killer, certainly. Or just "hold lit torch, whole screen is lit", no sprites required, no eyestrain

Torches wouldn't be so bad if their radius was much larger and you didn't need three of them to achieve max luminosity

I agree completely. The default client is terrible compared to Ender's. I use Ender's myself.

Dude you got a game almost-unplayable using the original client you made and accept it without shame? I mean I've died killed by a boar hidden behind a tree with classic client, ive been searching for hours a string and didn't find one because it hides behind trees and rocks, would it be so hard to fix that?

Why don't you just hire ender for a symbolic amount. Gives the guy motivation and gives us a good client.

When playing HnH the first time and using the default it gives you a very good view on the intentions of this game: survival - it's not unplayable it's just more comfortable with custom clients...

Indeed. The animal's should have hard stealth instead of relying on client side camo that can just be removed. ;)
