The idea of all or nothing swimming doesn't sound very good, because at best all you do is save some time at the risk of losing your character.
If there was a way to try to swim back or something maybe, but instant death makes it so it will only be used for a few short distances that everyone will use and anything higher ignored, so a better system would be to just allow players to only cross those few short distances and ignore the rest.

Actually, I'm wondering whether the new map will have areas inaccessible except by swimming - either forever, or until boats are implemented. That might be an interesting way for folks with high stats to preserve semi-private hunting grounds, forests, etc. untouchable by merely ordinary characters.

I disagree, I have been swimming in real life for quite some time, and I haven't died once. I am with Delamore on this one.

Edit: I forgot to mention, what would most concern me about swimming is lag. When there is significant lag, it can be very difficult to walk around. From the sound of it, when swimming this can kill you.

Assuming realism matters...
Plenty of water is incredibly dangerous and life threatening, and if you ran out of stamina you would die.
I have swam in undertows and the like, and i assure you, you can't just "float" around, if you stopped swimming because you were tired, you would be pulled under and die. There are also rapids, fast moving currents that will pull you into rocks, whirlpools, and tons of other potential water dangers.
Sure in a calm lake with little to no waves you can just "float" indefinitly with no effort, you try and take a swim in a raging river and you will die if you run out of stamina, and hell, even if you had some stamina you would likely die.

Personally i would like a mix of calm swimmable waters that you could just float around in, and gain back stamina by just floating without moving... and rushing dangerous waters that if your stamina runs out you will simply be pulled under and die.

Recharging stamina while swimming leads to infinite swimming, which both defeats the point of boats and is unrealistic (hypothermia gets you faster than you'd expect). Swimming should be reserved mostly for emergencies, main way to cross water would be boats and rafts. I imagine a raft wouldn't be all that hard to made, provided there are trees nearby.

Recharging stamina while swimming leads to draining your hunger bar which leads to starving to death while swimming, since I believe loftar stated your inventory is inaccessible. (Or something to that effect). Depending on the exact drainage rates and distances, that could very well limit swimming from allowing ocean-crossing escapades while still being reasonably useful to cross smaller lakes and rivers.

I think swimming vs vehicles should be a matter of convenience (or circumstance) vs. speed, staying power, and safety.
