Also, some custom clients (Amber f.e.) have a built-in feature which would do that task for you using grid ids as guidance. But for that to work the client has to know the grid ids and I don't think those have been updated for the new world yet...

can confirm. i've scouted the island and found that 4 large faction groups reside here.

of the four
one is hedgehogs and many towns that come with them.
two are very hostile.
and one is super veterans.

Western Continent has been very peaceful. I never saw any scents (save one trespassing scent from my own alt) until I hopped into a whirlpool and ended up at the Southern Continent two days ago (after which I found scents within less than five minutes).
