On me and my friends adventures, we stumbled upon a floating sprucecap-man in the water near the local beaver dam. We took him safely to land and tried CPR but nothing helped. We gave him a burial north of the dam and many tears were shed. Rest in peace.

Given you can't chop a tree if <5000 energy, I'd say no, he didn't die of starvation.

You cant dig if you're below 5000, but you can still chop trees.
