Will Haven and Hearth remain free?

Postby Agarrett » Sun Nov 15, 2009 8:14 pm

I heard a rumor in the IRC and I wanted to see if it was true. If they do make it cost, then they probably will lose a lot of their player base.

I've been trying to convince Jorb that if J&L work towards it properly and put the effort into it, at some point this game could charge.
Jorb does not seem to believe that the game is worth the money, and at this point that is true but if the effort was put into it with the goal of making money at some point in the future, yes Haven could make money.
The game would not lose all of its players but it would lose a large percentage, the only way to combat this is to have a sizable player base beforehand to absorb the shock.

I think at one time they said they were considering making a system where free accounts would be limited to playing X hours a week, and paying players could play on their accounts more. X hours was some large number that I don't remember, enough for anyone who isn't playing the game too much.

The game needs a lot more polish before they can charge a monthly fee for it. I think it will certainly be worth paying for in the not so far future, but I personally would quit playing if it happened. Same if it went to some sort of a "free" model where paying customers have advantage.

There are other ways for a commercial mmorpg to cost nothing but produce an income. But that may result in balance issues.

The only way to know for sure is to hear from the creators themselves.
