I highly suggest not bothering with palisades until you have an idol up, so you can set multiple exit crossroads.

Draw experience and learn a few lessons from it, pick up any valuables you might have, destroy your HF and start on a different location.

Definitely gets walls up as soon as possible and just keep the key on an alt. It's annoying to deal with but you'll be robbed blind constantly otherwise. Crossroads are nice and definitely a high priority but security is first and foremost. Just make sure to keep the materials to construct a battering ram handy. Not in tree form either -- I mean gather up that rope and glue and keep it handily tucked away on a few emergency alts.
