What i have to do now is get myself a set of new clothes... Not a huge fan of Rags..
On the other hand, i'm betting other newbies tried fishing, it's not that realiable, learned that the hard way

My first 2 characters subsisted almost exclusively on fish for the INT, and I was never at risk of starving. You need to fish with leeches, and find out what kind of fish you are near. A little digging on the wiki helps a ton. Once you are in need of specific stats, you switch to lures. It really doesn't take that much patience, and I find it doesn't require alts, like most people. There's a hundred things to do on the internet, a simple alt+tab or dual screen setup and you're off. Also, a LOT of people stick with the nettle undergarments, forever. Just saying.
I was one of those nubs that started thanks to projared, and I'm happy I did. It's a great game, if you can even call it that. It's more like science; a sociological experiment. I have had my first real taste of pure, unadulterated dickishness in this game specifically by a trio of Russian fucks. Bring on WWIII, I say! Scorched Hearth, mother fuckers!
I'm sticking it out and rebuilding. While I almost exclusively agree with Jared's perspective on bugs/exploits, I do take full advantage of the tanning bug. Any other way is just silly. 8 hrs 40 mins + manual labor with anything but the most minimal setup is going to net you heartache. I have had a 16 tub operation going for a few days, and I need to be able to finish it asap, use it, then be prepared to drop it like its hot, now that I'm nomading.
Anyways! Just wanted to say that Jared's video is spot-on, and his tale of woe is a sobering addition. I hope it brings in more people with the right expectations, to replace some of the jaded 'buorgeoirsie' that seem to be shut-in anti-pop hipsters who are ironically in full support of maintaining a status quo of stagnation in this game, even though it's contrary to their "authority issue" mindset. As far as I can tell, anyways.
It's disheartening if you come to the forums too much, new players. As with all forums, there is a super active core, and a vocal minority, who care only about their ego and reputation, and then there's a bunch of honest folks (who will kill you if prompted, don't misunderstand) just enjoying their time in-game, and are the silent majority on the forums.
