Plenty of games exist that are either singleplayer or strictly cooperative. If you don’t want to deal with competition (including griefing for its own sake) don’t play a competitive game.

Dismissing the applicability of ethics is called nihilism, and is in fact typically associated with immaturity. (Perhaps unjustly so in some cases, but in your case I doubt you arrived at this conclusion through extensive research and reasoning.)

When is it 'just a video game'? Is it only 'subjectively bad and inferior' when you impersonate a community member to slander their name and personally hurt those close to them? Or when you spread falsehoods to undermine trust in a community member, both inside and outside the game? Is allying with other griefers to form a force that cannot feasibly be resisted within the game rules with the specific intent to make the game less enjoyable for others really in line with the devs' endorsement of PvP as a necessary evil to prevent griefing? When you dedicate so much of your time in attempting to keep others from enjoying themselves, I can hardly call that 'just playing a game'.

Did you even follow the links you posted? I sincerely doubt you increase the financial value of MightySheep's griefing. Or if you intended to refer to the third link on the disambiguation page, I am not exactly seeing MightySheep's apparent "kindness", "gifts, help, favors, or [other forms] of generosity" in these actions.

Griefing and trolling are not the same. The latter term is increasingly used to excuse being a dickwad (see also: "just a prank bro") but that's bullshit. The devs are definitely trolls, but they are not spiteful and hold no genuine malice towards the userbase. This in contrast to griefers who destroy community projects. It's been five days since this 'prank' began; when do we reach the point where they go "scared you good, huh?" and walk away laughing? The joke is long since dead and they go out of their way to maximize the harm they cause, even if it means putting in tedious effort. Knocking someone out to steal their pants is trolling. Spending days of time and effort to destroy as much as possible is plain malice.

its a difference of degree, not kind. People like to “win” in competitive games. Would you call someone “childish” or “nihilistic” for killing you in a 3rd person shooter deathmatch, or an RTS game? Whether they spend 5 seconds koing you or 5 days seiging you the motivation is basically the same.

And if you think that’s somehow different because that’s the goal of those games - haven is a sandbox. There is no goal but what players make and since the game is designed to be inherently competitive, those with the knowledge, skills, time and commitment to compete best will have the most power to decide that direction.

That is the game as JL want it to be.
