A locked room mystery: The ghostly glutton

Postby banok » Thu Nov 07, 2024 5:25 pm

Today I logged in and found my study report empty, strange, I looked in my study table and I had to retake possession. I wondered if it was decay but there was none. Then I noticed my main table and berry table had been gorged empty, and left the pips too!

No one has mined in, and the only entrance is claimed and blocked with no scents... thus this is a classic locked room mystery.

While I do not not 100% what happened I have a good idea what seems most likely, and thought it fun to see if people can come to the same conclusion. I have omitted nothing vital, but could add some extra context for clues if it turns out not to be too easy already.

The perpetrator has more int*stealth than your perc*expl or you're the perpetrator. Now give me a token for solving the mystery.

I'm sitting on 38 perc 36 explor, so while possible this is not my conclusion.

To be clear, only the outer entrance is claimed not inside.

The obvious answer feels to me like someone was logged out in that cave before you claimed it, ate all of your stuff and then hearth teleported.

Haha ok I wondered if someone would just immediately come to same conclusion but thought it would be entertaining to see.

Yeah I didnt play first couple of days so they must have logged out in the cave near w16 start and only come back last night.

The fact they they "stole" stuff like berries & apples when there was good curios, leather, and a tar-ed rowboat lying around shows they must be a noob

They didnt need to hearth, I wonder if they walked out cave planning to come back for more but realised they couldnt re-enter. Its possible they logged out and will log back in and steal more

Note to self: create alts in caves to steal from dwellers at the start of all new worlds.

The fact that this even happened is kinda hilarious ngl. I hope it was a new player.

Sidenote: all early game good curios you find such as Ruby Dragonflies, Flotsams, Ant Empresses... etc, should be alt locked if they are not actively in your study desk as its too risky leave them lying around. You are lucky they didn't steal your good shit and then just destroy the rest, that is what most would have done.

Haha yeah its been funny.

ive had leather and some important bits in the leanto incase I do get a visitor with thief skills, but the tubs had just finished more leather in this case. I just put my boat in leanto incase they do log back into cave but yeah Im not too worried.

probably the only world Ive played semi-seriously and not seen a single flotsam *single tear*

Abandon cave life and join me in island settling, I've seen 3 already and had to miss 3 days due to irl. In the islands we are wealthy with flotsams.

If you had to reclaim the study desk, you could have the perpetrator's name by inspecting this desk before you reclaim it.

The perpetrator was already inside
You know well the perpetrator and got access to your cave.

It was you but you have carbon monoxide poisoning and forgot doing it. Open up a window and buy a CO2 detector asap
