What to look out for in PvP?

Postby wirelai » Wed Apr 08, 2026 5:24 pm

I am hermitting and have met strangers in the past but so far ppl have been friendly or I've hearthed away before they reached me. Eventually I want to be able to defend my claim from raiders through melee PvP, but I've had no previous PvP experience (I'm decent at PvE and general combat knowledge), so I'm very naive about what to do. Sorry in advance if any of my questions are too dumb to answer.

What's the average strength, agility, MC etc. for a typical raider?
What's the typical combat moveset for a PvP robber? What about a player killer?
For a first-time target do raiders typically attack solo or in groups?
About when in progression do people look at my base and think it's worth a siege?
What outstanding buildings, materials, etc. do raiders look out for?
What advantages are there for hurricane/ender raiders over vanilla ones?
Is a village or a pclaim more likely to get attacked?

If you have ganked/robbed ppl in the past please tell me your modus operandi so I know what to look out for; if you've successfully defended against a PvPer/raid/seige please let me know what worked and what didn't. If you have any other tips for me please let me know. Thank you!

if your local Warlord decides you're worth messing with, there is not much you can do as a hermit other than move your shit somewhere else when they arent looking.

almost guaranteed they have 3x (probably even more) whatever your combat stats are. also guaranteed they have higher quality armor and weapons than you. oh, and if you really entertain them, they will position bot alts to watch you 24/7.

you can delay the inevitable and engage in siege chess (stockpile arrows), but you will probably lose everything this way. hard leather and brimstone are next to worthless to them late in the world. your blood and suffering are seen as far more valuable.

the more likely scenario you should prepare for is being able to escape on foot if you run into one of them in the wild. this is the only situation a hermit has a chance to "win"

my advice is to start making a network of bases loosely connected to each other, train and feed alts that you can poke them with if they have you blockaded, and dont keep 100% of your shit in one location. use underground tunnels and spam palisades to make it more of a hassle to uproot you.

when things go sideways, just evacuate and go play the game elsewhere. be sure not to leave scents they can track you with though, or they might just follow you to your next base.

good luck

This is good advice ^

I would only add:

1 Base security. Make sure mineholes are properly secured.
2 You probably want 2 - 3 layers of palis on the surface (with sufficient air gap) and L1 and L2 to buy yourself time to move your shit in case of a seige
3 Most raiders scout via waterways. Hopefully your base is far enough away from frequently used waterways and TWs to not be seen.
4 If you are not opposed to using alts, you should be upkeeping a second base you can move into, at least one province away.
5 If you have a separate claim for your ship dock, tunnel to it on L3 or lower
6 Wouldn't hurt to have a safe house nearby if you can build it inconspicuously (invisible on the minimap) you can also use this base as a vault
7 Don't place anything valuable or flashy on the surface. Or at least not within viewing distance from outside of your walls

All of this makes you a hard target. Unless you piss someone off, or the raider is bored, they will move on to a softer target. I've been playing as a hermit since world 12 and have only been seiged once. Probably from violating points 3 and 7 in my list above. You are much more likely to be ganked on your boat or on horseback than seiged. With a few alts, a second base with a second dock, you can move everything including your main with almost 0 risk. That being said, as a hermit your ability to quickly relocate is paramount.

Ps if someone places a naked scouting alt by your base they are probably trying to figure out what times you are active. You can fix this by using an auto clicker when you are afk to move your character in and out of their viewing range over a set amount of time until they give up. Maybe.

For world 16.1 1,000+ probably, for world 16, much higher at this point.
It's worth noting that the higher the stats the less benefit per point via diminishing returns.

For someone with just theft, 'PvP robber', could be anything really.
For a player killer, this is your starting manual. But you never know

No way to know ahead of time, but raiding is more fun with friends if you can get them to log in. It's worth noting though some people can and will call for backup in Discord. With Thingwalls and Charter Stones help can teleport from across the world, while the attacker or attacked play for time.

wirelai wrote:About when in progression do people look at my base and think it's worth a siege?

Steel age, but also ease of siege. Displays of wealth. Thing like table and symbel items.

wirelai wrote:What outstanding buildings, materials, etc. do raiders look out for?

If we're still talking about the perspective of someone from outside the base looking in; Stone Towers, Great Halls, Charter Stones, and mineholes.

wirelai wrote:What advantages are there for hurricane/ender raiders over vanilla ones?

Once you use a custom client, you'll never go back to vanilla. Quick swap weapons, some bots, and scripts. Hurricane has best vibes.

wirelai wrote:Is a village or a pclaim more likely to get attacked?

Probably a village, but that's because the natural progression of the game goes from private claim ---> establish village. There's no reason not to establish a village even as a hermit.

wirelai wrote:If you have ganked/robbed ppl in the past please tell me your modus operandi so I know what to look out for;

Operate opportunistically. Mostly just roaming, raiding when the chance presents itself, and avoiding unnecessary fights we can’t win.

The way you people talk about this shit is insane. Was a single hermit sieged this world?

I usually look for easy targets.
People who look like they are struggling just to navigate the world. You will see these people fumbling around in the forest.
They will often tell you "oh didn't see you there" when you have been on their minimap for a while.
I also go for bases that are not secured properly. There are so many people and sometimes even veterans who either don't know or think they know.
These people are the best source of loot.

Proper siege is too hard work for no gain.
All you have to do is gain enough game knowledge and your base is safe at least.
