SLAVE CENTRAL

Postby Wotan » Sat Jul 03, 2010 12:11 am

Welcome, oh ye good and mighty ppl of the hearth!

The time has come to settle this important question once and for all:

"How much does a slave cost me?"

Offers can be made in any currency whatsoever, bulbs and gns preferred.
Please keep in mind to mention your specs and equipment, special abilities should also be mentioned, as in any curiculum vitae.
Thusly, your price can be negotiated.

The standard slave works for 2 weeks, this is one slave time unit.
If the slave offers his allegience for a shorter duration, the price should develope somewhat like this:

1/2 stu: 44% of price
6/14 stu: 35% of price
5/14 stu: 27% of price
4/14 stu: 20% of price
3/14 stu: 14% of price
2/14 stu: 9% of price
1/14 stu: 5% of price

I believe that everybody has an opinion to this question, however, not everybody might dare to speak it out aloud.
I can understand that. In this case, simply sent me a message with your offer and it will be kept in the strictest confidence.
I guarantee you, that I will get the best possible price for your services and I only demand a mere 15% for the intervention.

However, you are also free to offer your services in this very thread or whereever you see fit.

There is still a lot of questions open, for example the punishment that a slave must recieve if he doesn´t follow his obligation.
Also, there sould be some different slave codes with a the justly granted rights that a slave should possess.
Depending on the code on which the contract is signed, the price may then vary.

This thread, and your recent posts in many threads on the same subject raises an interesting question; what is the life of a hearthling worth?

In you case it is 1 silver nugget, which is what I will pay to whoever delivers your corpse to my doorstep.

Be that as it may, this is not a direct offer for my services as a slave.

wotan poses an interesting question, whether you decide to use the word slave, servant, laborer, or whatever, is there opportunity for the trade of services to goods instead of just goods to goods? as far as i've seen the market has been pretty much all goods to goods at this point.

Slavery would occur naturally in the haven economy if it worked.

Providing a service for goods is much much more complicated than just trading goods for goods.
The slave is limited to only a few tasks if his/her skills are lower than that of the employees. And generally low lp hearthlings will be providing service for goods they can't produce.
Higher lp hearthlings can simply trade for the things they need. No need for a 2 week slave contract.

My brother (9years old) plays with me on my farm. His hearthling is much less advanced than mine, so I look at him as hired help. The thing is... each time I want to ask him to do something for me, I end up doing it myself.
If he were to harvest the fields, seed quality would go down. If he were to make me a herbalist table, I would have slightly less quality tree sprouts. ect.

The only thing a slave would do well is plowing, building roads and gathering clay/soil/water.
Sorry to rain on your idea. :(

gns ? gold nuggets ?

even if you were to pay 1 bar for being your worker/slave/bitch, let say, 4 days, i personally and i think most of ppl would agree that it would be better to waste those 4 days prospecting looking for a gold mine.

Some services do exist, but the problem is there's no real obligation, and a lot of people would take advantage of that. My first few weeks playing Zamte, I met a guy who lived on the grassland I settled on, and he offered to pay me to help him do some work. I helped build palisades around some plots in his town, helped him dig up the bricks for his brick wall around his plot, as well as helping build a ram to replace a gate he'd lost a key to, tamed cattle, and a few other minor things. In exchange he gave me a pick axe, a scythe, a meat grinder, and enough tin and bronze for a mansion and two cellars, as well as my first few chests, some decent herbalist tables, and some other miscellaneous tools, such as a decent quality sling and stone axe/saw.

When somebody is trustworthy and makes good on their offers to pay for labor, it works very well. However I'm sure there are many who would gladly let you work until it was time to pay you.

If villages need labor that badly they would benefit more from recruiting new players (like myself *cough*) who are active, willing to work hard building up skills, and will stick around. Much more valuable and practical than a slave whom one has to spend time and effort to train but will eventually leave the village.

Even though the thought of it is tempting, slaves as such are not feasible in H&H as it is tends have advantages to do stuff alone/in a fixed group over letting stuff get made for you by strangers IN YOUR TOWN. What if the guy you just invited over is not your slave, but a spy for another faction? Or just a thief or griefer waiting for the moment you log off? Think of the amount of devastation that could happen if you let someone have total control over your area. To me, there are only two things a slave would be useful for: mining and wallbuilding/brick hauling. If anyone wants to do this kind of stuff, please, feel free to PM me.

Why I think this thread won't be all too popular: The duration of 2 weeks. Why would someone dedicate several days of their game to something like, uhm, cavebulbs? You can grind up an alt with the per*exp in one, max two days, buy a cheap monocle and go hunt some. This way, you'd have slavery-free cavebulbs or goldnuggets (can always trade your bulbs for nuggets, right?).

One last thing for OP to think about: By hiring people to work for bulbs/gold, would the slave-owner be having slaves to do his jobs, or would he be doing slavework (making gold/producing bulbs) for his workers instead?
