Navigation

I've been wandering the world, trying to figure out where I am on the map - and mostly cannot do it. The mini-map is at one angle, the screen I move in is shifted by around 45 degrees, and the gods alone know whether the published maps match either orientation. It's also not always clear what terrain a given blotch is meant to represent, since the various blotches change colour depending on the background. I can't even use the level of the local wildlife to orient myself, as level IV territory on the recent map actually contains level I opponents.

Even without these problems, this would still be massively difficult once the map gets huge. So what I'm suggesting is twofold - a "where am I" function, and perhaps a "walk there" function.

This wouldn't matter if I were just walking kind of randomly looking for hunting, but we've now got localized resources. I've been trying and failing to find the sea... which is a pretty huge target. How is this going to work once we move to a much huger map? Perhaps it needs attention before we move.

I agree that a navigation function would be very useful.

In the mean time, all maps I've seen have north at the top, your isometric view has north at the top right, and the easiest way I've navigated is by using the really old map that has ridges on it.

Roads and rune stones are also really useful for finding settlements.

Finally, even if the different blotches represent different things, they're fairly uniquely shaped, so you should get some clues from that.

oh! there's a map with ridges! that would help immensely; where can I find it?

Also, which window is the "isometric view"?

Im gonna say something 'radical' here, but I hope that when theres a map reset there wont be a published map. nor will the devs release one, Cartography should be the players responsibility. Either in a metagame sense, or helped with ingame tools

The Devs have stated they'd like to have a per player map with a "fog of war" effect.

I would like the ability to save the position of certain places, so that you could be pointed in the direction towards said places.
Like a compass of sorts.

Edit: When pathfinding is implemented, I would also like to be able to have my character travel to a saved place.

Well, if there aren't any in game tools, I won't be going anywhere except my local neighbourhood. I still have no idea how to find any of the major towns except bottleneck in the current map. So much for trade ;-)

If my suggestion would get implemented, players could share their known places with each other,
so you wouldn't have to travel the world yourself to know where all the villages are.

Maybe a shared position could be approximate, so that autopilot wouldn't work and you would have to
travel manually to get there.
They could also have a bad aim, like a hard-to-track scent.
