We need more types of walls. Not only something to stand between the roundpole fence and the palisade, but also something to fill the gap that separates the later from the almighty brickwall.

Image
Roundpole fence
The roundpole fence is the simplest to obtain, but does not succeed in protecting unclaimed ground from your random starving newbie.

Image
Simple stone wall
The simple stone wall would sit between the roundpole fence and the palisade. Makes use of stones, which are readily avaiable even to the newbie, but the construction would be time consuming. It's up to discussion if it should require other materials, like bone glue. Would perform the job of protecting the unclaimed ground of those who still cannot afford yeomanry or leather. As suggest, a dedicated thief with 30+ strenght would put it down with ease.

Palisade
The palisade can still be the all-around mid-tier wall. Requires materials (glue, leather, rope) not hard to find, but that will require the newbie some time to gather. While he searches for the materials/gathers logs/wait for the initial cornerpost to set, the simple stone wall will provide protection.

Image
Citywall/Hard stone wall/Ellaborate wall/Complex wall/Troy wall/Whatever you wanna call it
This wall will stand just before the brickwall. Will require stone, hardened leather, clay, maybe something else that's hard to get but not as hard as metal (bear fur?). Ideal for villages who desire more protection than the palisade can offer but stil weren't able to find metal (like mine, hahahahah).

Brickwall
Stays as the top-tier wall. No changes needed.

Well, it requires 200 or so strength with a pickaxe to do anything at all to a palisade, or a battering ram and 30-50 strength.

Therefore, I believe that the stonewall should require, let's say, 200 strength or 180 without equipment, and varying decreases therein with pickaxe/sledge.

Such that with a sledge, one could do it with, say, 40 str. That sounds fair. Having lived in an area where stone was not only abundant, but very heavily in use, along our roads are about 12 miles of hand-built stone wall that has been there for a long time. When they recently did some construction on an area, they had to bring in a dozer to demolish a twenty foot section of the stuff, and that didn't really do squat to the surrounding area of stone. A stone wall, once built, is incredibly sturdy, and requires a LOT of strength to take down.

Regardless, here are some suggestions for material costs for a stonewall.

Stone walls IRL require stone (obviously) and mortar or some form of glue-like sticky substance to hold them in place while the stone wall is being built.

A good sticky, formative substance which offers some structure but not much is mud.

Therefore:

Beginning stonewall corners require 30 stone, 4 soil, and to finish building requires 2 L water in inventory.
Additional stonewall wall-segments require 10 stone, 1 soil, and 0.5 L water in inventory.
Gates... require boards? maybe 2 boards? Four? and 5 stone?
Additional stonewall corners require 15 stone, 2 soil, 1.0 L water.

You won't be saying that in a week or two when you realize how many abandoned homes there are. A 30 second boat ride south of my village literally bring you to the ghetto. There's abandoned claims everywhere with the occasional newb taking things and raiders patrolling. It reminds me of Detroit.

A better type of wall for my alt characters that I don't use for hunting at all would be nice, but... it's not like getting supplies for wood palisade is THAT steep of an effort. Simple hunting of foxes even at low MM with a sling can very quickly get you enough leather to make your palisade.

Alternatively...make some silk. Find a trade. I guarantee you like. 99% of people will trade you leather for silk if hunting is such a big deal for you.. and after you get the initial mulberry, planting supplies, and unraveling supplies it's pretty easy peasy. Expansion of silkworm is sort of slow at first but then it's like you're expanding exponentially and as long as it's properly maintained you'll have more then enough silk for trade. and yes, I know. It's probably risky without a proper wall to protect you. That's H&H for you, though. Another suggestion is to pick such an in middle of nowhere area that no-one would bother to go into being as they would have to carry their boat quuiite a long way or be able to be seen from any sort of river.

The other thing is.. I do see some abuse in making walls with materials that are simpler to obtain.. one of them being some major macro abuse would probably get involved. Especially if you allowed the ability that only stone was required to build a wall and that the wall could actually sustain a reasonable amount of hits.

My only problem with a palisade is that it's a bitch to destroy if you ever decide to expand your claim or move stuff around. I know people say "well just build your palisade 3x of the actual space you're using!" but that's annoying in that you end up using extra resources and your actual settlement looks strange with walls so far out, not to mention you'd have to worry about decay if it's outside of your claimed land.

I'm mostly a hermit and my main enjoyment in this game is simply making up my own little claim and organizing everything and basically just designing the layout of where I live and do my work. I hate to think of putting up a palisade because it just seems so "final" and kind of hampers my ability to redesign and expand things if I want to.

I realize that my playing habits are pretty atypical, but it would be nice to have something that at least afforded some protection without being basically set in stone like a palisade wall. The option to quickly destroy anything on your own claim would be really nice, however unrealistic so I don't expect that to happen. Even just the change of making a roundpole gate require vandalism to open would be enough to keep me happy for a little while. Something that doesn't make my area look like free pickings to everyone that walks by. I understand that if people want to steal from me that they're going to, especially if I have such low defenses, but some sort of middle ground would be nice as well.

While your at it, make palisades and brick walls high enough to block ranged attacks, but stone walls and fences can't block em, since they are more of a fence and is shorter than the two walls (tall enough to block animals).
