Cooking Curios

Postby ImpalerWrG » Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:02 pm

We have so many nice Curios for Explorers to find, a lumberjack or a fisher can get things while they work (roots and Fish Eyes) and even something as mundane as making boards has a random Drop Curio to delight the Carpenters.

But A Chef just seems SOL, they alone seem to be utterly dependent on receiving their Curios from others and must toil away over a hot meat-grinder/frying pan/cauldron without ever getting any random drop Curios. And No Pearls don't count as Explorer generally harvest and boil these themselves, in some instances going to the point of becoming roving Pearl farmers taking cauldrons with them and dump the cooked mussels as a waste byproduct.

What we need are either cooked curios or random drop when cooking Curios. Shrew Bread seems to be the closest we have to the former but the wiki dose not clearly state if cooking is the determining stat in making it or if it is edible (its made of wax so it cant be very appetizing if it is). Birthday cake becoming a Cooked Curio sounds like a viable option and I could see a number of new high end sugary confections existing as both food and Curio such as Gum drops and Candy Canes.

Random Drop Curios seem a bit harder to come up with. Their are two logical pathways, "Uber-food" in which an exceptional version of some food is generated rather then the normal outcome but which is still food and "Mistakes" which yield some non-food Curio item either in place of or in addition to the expected food. Under Uber-food we have the obvious "Image of the Virgin Jorb on a Pancake", it is of course a normal pancake usable in any pancake recipe in addition to being a Curio. On the Mistake side I could see a number of different recipes yielding a common mistake item, say for example any burnt baked good becomes a "Burnt Mess" curio item which would then have to be ground up to get ash. One particularly gruesome possibility is any use of the meat-grinder can randomly drop a "severed finger" Curio, the player may or may not lose dexterity as a result.

As an imminent cook I'm a bit concerned about this too. Especially compared to the truckloads of curios I get as an explorer. Just stopping by a swamp I get FOUR, dragonfly, lady's mantle, royal mushroom, shocked frog.

I'll keep it in mind.

Crafts not telling their relevant stat(s) is a general problem.
