About Newb town suggestions: If you just want to hear the idea, and don't want this crap, skip down to the problem sectionI came up with some suggestions (I had 4, but one was already brought up) to explore situations I've run into over the first 2 weeks back in game since world 3. I am sure there will be more, most likely when we get crushed and everyone quits, so those ideas will follow this same format.
About me: I played a bit in World 3. Maybe a month or two. The town I was in fell apart due (at least in part) to an over-zealous law giver. I enjoyed the game then, but got a little burnt out. I decided to shelf it for a while. I was tempted to come back for world 4, but didn’t get around to it. When it ka-boomed I decided it was my open invitation to come back.
About our town: The town I am in is comprised mostly of a group of gamers from a different game. Yes, it is a game with a terrible interface and steep learning curve. It started as a post on that forum and turned into this kind of hodge podge “lol lets all spawn at with ur HS lol!” I think it is because of this that the town suffers a bit from a lack of direction. No one is really in charge, but that is a different story. Also only a handful of us have experience in this game. In spite of these issues, the town has grown massively (at least by my standards) and I think we all feel very successful.
Why you should keep reading: I like to think I bring a semi-unique perspective to the arena of “suggestions”. I am not super experienced, but I am not super inexperienced. I like games that are easy to use, but I don’t mind working for my fun. I am in a village of, for the most part, people in my same position. And beyond that, I have tried to familiarize myself with what Jorb and Loftar have in mind for this game long term. I have read their posts (the ones I could find) and found that their idea of fun and mine are compatible. I am not here to say everything needs to be changed. This game is pretty damn fun as it is.
So with all that out of the way, I will present a handful of problems I see in the early game, and my suggestion for fixing them. Pretty straight forward.
Problem: I want to start playing the game but I am lost in the interface. No one I know has a village and no one I don’t know trusts me. I am stuck as a nomad.
Explanation: The simple fact is that every village’s greatest defense is staying hidden. To allow anyone into your town is a potential, massive, breach of security. Most early towns, when they need people the most, is also when they are most vulnerable.
The other half of this is the poor newb. Happy to take any bitch job for a pocket full of curios and a handful of bread, but because he doesn’t know anyone else who plays this game he ends up as nothing more than a liability, lost to wonder alone and eventually quit.
Suggested Solution: Allow villages to recruit peasants. Peasants can’t access cupboards or harvest crops, they can’t cut down trees or carve stones but they can carry logs and, pull carts and lay stones. A peasant would also be denied the ability to attack other village members. When the village is satisfied with the peasant’s intentions, they can bring him or her on as a full member.
This won’t eliminate all the risks of accepting people into your village but it would give you a slightly extended safety net. A new Hearth secret could be created with similar rules, where whoever uses it defaults to being unable to trespass, vandalize, or whatever the third thing is I can’t remember.
