Hel, Valhalla, and the Elysion Fields (the afterlife)

Postby Bodolf » Sun May 15, 2011 11:02 am

Ok so, it's 5 30 am and I'm waiting for some silkmoth eggs to hatch, so thought I would post an idea me and a village mate have been kicking around.

The idea is the afterlife, and if this has been suggested, that's great! would just like to give our version of it.

also, if this is a completely unreasonable idea (im no programmer) forgive me :D, we just thought it would be fun, and could reduce ragequits/make death slightly less painful.

Ill lay it out: when you die, you get sent to an afterlife determined by how you died- preferably 3 types of afterlife (maps could be smallish!)

1. Hel- You get sent here if you are killed shortly after being summoned (or maybe just if you die with enough murder/vandalism scents existing in the hearthland) -

2. Valhalla- you go here if you die after prolonged combat, with combat stats above a certain level (say 200-300 UA for example)

3. Elysian Fields (or Norse equivalent if it's too mythology breaking)- this is where everyone else would go

Purpose and implementation (just brainstorming here): The afterlife would be a place (separate much smaller maps) to exchange death stories, fool around, or get some encouragement to start again. You could even (very very rarely!) present an almost impossible way to escape the afterlife and reincarnate (or not!). In the afterlife, you could be killed again and again (except maybe in the Elysian fields where combat could be disabled, or impossible) and you would just re spawn in your respective afterlife.

-In Hel

I imagine there would be constant senseless death here by other doomed players (and/or dangerous demon monsters [purple bears?] :D)- lots of crappy low q food and drink (it could all give hurt fep), no real resources to speak of, and a gloomy atmosphere, such as a massive cave network that was colored reddish

-In Valhalla

You appear wearing all your gear, but that's all you would bring with you- there would be great weapons and armor re spawning regularly in the version I imagine (in case you were caught unequipped)- Valhalla would be like a better version of Hel, constant warfare- great beer and and all the food you could eat, massive feasts and war stories- maybe even mock wars to amuse the fallen warriors- and certainly a Hall of Fame for the greatest fallen hearthling lords.

-In the Elysian Fields

this would be a nice comfortable grassland area- with a mildly eerie vibe (you are dead afterall). Maybe a small island with no Trees and no combat and scattered Inns- just a place to swap stories, curse the animal that gored you, or to just relax knowing the grind is over and lag can never hurt you again :).

There's our idea. If this is even possible to implement in any form, I think it would add a lot of depth,- maybe reduce some rage quitting, or at least make death less painful as I mentioned (and maybe even enjoyable! in a small way).

Cheers

*edit* just realized after posting, there would have to be a way to prevent overcrowding, but that could be done easily enough by only allowing hearthlings over a certain total LP to qualify for the afterlife, and make full ancestor bonus only available once 'the soul moves on' or something like that.

haha yea, i was expecting to hear no exceptions right off the bat, and id be inclined to agree with you :D

of course forums are best place to swap stories, but this way would be very immersive imo

I like the hel and valhalla Idea, but only as a limited mini game, maybe for an ingame day or something.

also no chance to reincarnate.

Aye, if implementing this was in any way possible (and something jorb an loftar were interested in), i'm guessing mini game-like would have to be the way to go -i get a bit carried away sometimes, heh.

some way to leave messages would be cool- high scoring players being allowed to leave a message by statue representing them even better.

I like the idea. If it's a minigame, perhaps it could determine the percentage of LP you get back when you reincarnate, the players who do best on the afterlife getting more LP when reincarnating. This wouldn't remove the change/tradition slider of course, but just add a small extra percentage (+5%?) if you do good on the afterlife. Every character would be equal on the afterlife, because otherwise the newbies wouldn't even stand a chance, unless the enemies scaled with your character.
Either that or just make it a place to roam around with your dead character until you reincarnate it, maybe even being able to fight with other dead characters and continuously respawn (or not) in a Valhalla-ish way, which would kinda fit the background of the game.
I don't like the idea of 3 different afterlife places though, just one would be good.

Hate the idea, just make a better game over screen perhaps showing some achievements or something, some character stats logged along the way (hours played, hearthlings killed, etc, etc).

You guys just don't want to end up in Hel ^^ In seriousness though, you -hate- the idea of having a place after death to chat and see high scores? In any form?

I agree a better endgame screen would be great, and I'm guessing much easier to implement- thing is some people really do invest large amount of time in a hearthling- and likely wouldn't just restart right away- if at all this world. Would be cool if once you died, you were able to meet other great players who've died in battle, (rarely I would think) and have a chance to fight to the death again and again (even just for end game bragging rights- to be king of underworld ^^) or just wander around a creepy environment while reflecting back on time played/carving out your story before moving on.

While your ideas are fun to ponder on, your proposed forms of implementation aren't very good and would be more bulk than actually ever used =)
Keep in mind that the finest fighters and players tend to not die. They are actually quite magnificent at not dying. We get very good about wearing full plate on at all times, farming behind walls safely, and mining with support beams and lots of shp. We're also very good at running if things get too dangerous or if we're badly outnumbered, though not everyone likes to brag about that.

What the area you proposed would turn into would be an endless field of unread runestones absolutely devoid of life and players except the occasional wandering newbie, who would promptly explain that they tried to swim across a lake.
