Where I go to forage there's an abandoned settlement with four cows and two sheep, which are separated from their respective males. There is only a small patch of grass, the rest is forest. The grass is half eaten, but it doesn't seem to be progressing. It's been this way for almost a month, and none of the animals starved yet. So yeah, I'd say you already have this feature.

It seems like an 'okay' idea, and I'm sure it would be good, if you suddenly decide to leave, for example I suddenly decided to go play Terraria for 3-4 days, came back and half my cows (all the good ones) were dead. This would save me the grief of spending a day(3 hours tops) to prepare before hand, that's all really.

I do see three really good applications:
1)Power/service outages, happens, hurts, no way to get to a computer, whatever the cause may be, CAN be extended enough for your cows to die, not always a way to plan for it.
2)Sick, if you get sick you don't give a fuck about HnH, if you're a hermit this means all your shit dies and if it's not properly claimed you can probably come back to seeing everything gone. - This is the strongest reason for it I see.
3)Unplanned vacations/sick family member/sudden heavy school load.

I'm not so sure about the eating grass = no milk thing, only because sometimes cows can be fucking stupid.
