Another wall suggestion

Postby Lumar » Sat Jun 04, 2011 6:38 pm

I wanted to start a new thread on how walls work, but saw too many when i searched and didn't want to get the "use search" bombardment

Here is my idea related to the OP:

3 types of walls
-fence
-wall
-fortified wall

Each wall type can be made from either
-wood
-brick
-stone

Wall sections
-wall
-corner post
-gate
-tower
-gatehouse

The fences would be like round pole fences, but have a stone and brick version, no metal required and only slightly stronger than round pole. They would have no soak or very low soak (say 50-75 str to break with bare hands) Brick and stone versions could be locked. used mostly for decoration and animal pens.

Walls would work like current walls, but would have lower soak values and a new wall would be added, stone walls. Stone walls would be stronger than brick and would require wrought for the gate and mortar for every tile, brick walls would use any hard metal (bronze, iron, steel) for the gate and corner posts. The metal requirements could be lowered (to reflect the lower protection)

Fortified walls would be stronger than current walls and none can be broken by bare hands. These walls would be 3x1 for wall sections and 3x3 for towers and 3x3 for corners, towers would count as corners but more expensive to build. Towers would allow players to get on top of the walls. Standing on top of walls would give a defense bonus when being attacked by ranged weapons and an attack speed bonus when using ranged weapons. When building a tower you have the option to choose direction of the entrance (south or east facing), entrance side can not be extended from. Gatehouse would be a special wall section 3x3 acts like a corner post but can only be extended on the sides the gate isn't on. Gate in gatehouse would be 1 tile (middle).

layout:
x= solid
o=walkable
e entrance

x
0 = fortified wall east/west
x

x o x = fortified wall north/south

x o x
o o o = newly built corner (also corner that is extended from on all 4 sides)
x o x

o o x = top right corner (corner must be extended from on west and south side and sealed to block it off, other corners are the same idea)
x o x

x o x
x o e = east facing tower
x o x

o o o = south facing tower
x e x

x o x
e o e - east/west facing gatehouse
x o x

x e x
o o o -north/south facing gatehouse
x e x

Towers follow same idea as corners with which side is blocked from waling when sealed. Sealing fortified corners/towers requires some of the material used to build it, stone+mortar, wood+bone glue or brick+mortar.

Gates could be built with 2-3 spaces between towers, corner posts or gatehouses.

Build menu for fortified walls would be:

Extend north, south, east, west (depending on which direction you are able to build)
Place Cornerpost
Place Tower, south or east
Place Gatehouse, south, north, east, west
Make gate to, north, south, east, west

I like this idea best. we need more options for walls.

For, just implement what someone was talking about over a year ago a lot, about how we should be able to just walk 'on' the walls for stuff.

Fortified (or stronger) walls should be 3x3, you should be able to walk 'under' them with holes to see out, and then take some stairs in them 'upside' to walk on top as well.

Call me biased, but I much preferred the current derailment than this one, so I split it.

I was wondering, why i must use brick to build walls and stone to build a house. What if i wanna have a brick home, or a stone-walled castle?

Fortified walls are cool and will bring the same feeling, that "Stronghold" did, but... It's gonna take pretty much to code it in, what, given the current bi-projected development, wont be so easy.

multi-material fences and walls on the other hand are gonna take more effort to draw, then to add a couple of code strings, sooo.... it would be nice to have em.^^

Many people hate this.

Blame devs for downplaying a lot of the inherent ability of this game to have more sandboxing aspects in these regards. :v

A whole new construction system in general where you build scaffolding, walls, floors add the roof etc seems like where this is heading.

Where it should be headed baby!

The devs probably won't take it that direction though, at least not for some time, if ever.

I recall a post from Loftar on this from 2009 or so where he states that it is just very hard to come up with a proper solution and code on how to implement this in a good way. I think the devs would like it too if we had more sandboxing or modules for buildings. I think stuff like crafters buildings were suggested before too: Build an oven inside a house = bakery etc.

That was actually the original plan, but it just wasn't feasible at the time at least.
