I can think of a lot of RL boundaries in this game. That's just the nature of any fantasy. If there's not anything familiar, the game loses any sense of fascination. (I've had this discussion before on the forum and other places.)

Besides.... copper, tin, and iron are common enough why bother trying to pan for flakes? Think you'd get a chunk of ore out of the river? I doubt it'd be any less work than mining when all is said and done.

That's called cave mining. In both w4 and w5, I've yet to find a cave without some metal in it. (Not counting the 'broken' caves that don't go in far enough to mine.)

platinum and silver can be found panning as well, im a big fan of the treasure hunter/prospector mags. :P just, you know, regarding your earlier statement. which reminds me, maybe panning could be the only way to get certain special minerals, like the above mentions platinum?

Or gems!!!

but mainly I thought this because early game is so hard to get hold of any mineral
since caves are mostly always claimed and if you happen to get hold of one, you will need to defend yourself
