Pets.

You know, the occasional dog or fox that walks around in which you can tame, that you have to feed and give it water just like you have to for yourself. Maybe they could help in combat too somehow, and maybe help you lift small stuff like branches or pieces of stone.

Searching usually gets what you want, especially searching for 'dogs' or 'taming wolves', should get you what you want. Suggested many times.
