I do agree with DoG on the LP loss. When you do the math, the total loss is around there, not to mention the time taken to get attributes up. Even at full tradition, the loss is bigger than the 25% stated for the same reason. When I first read the death penalties for full change, I had never thought of the hidden LP loss of the cost of raising those skills back up again. For some reason I thought it had read differently (forget what I thought exactly).
However, I'd still be one to play no matter how much of a death penalty there is. I like the ancestor concept (even though it's not fully fleshed out, imo) and how hardcore things get.
In the end, you're the one that decides what sort of penalties to accept when you die. You might argue that it is no decision, but when you realize how many LP you have between all characters you've inherited from and how many you've had to spend, there might be a real balance there. I've yet to die since shortly after this world started (made a big mistake with a bear and a small claim). Full change has paid off for me for the time being. I've been considering sliding back to neutral recently just in case I do get killed in a raid or something (cause I'm not going to die to an animal or drowning any time soon).
