100% CPU usage

The worst monsters in the Hearthlands warp the fabric of space and time..

100% CPU usage

Postby eql » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:41 am

when ever i play, it is consantly on 98+ cpu usage. the game somehow uses 270+mb of ram.

I get low fps when there are loads of items or crops etc on screen, surely there must be something wrong with the game and not my laptop.
I can play other games which require more power without problems and 100% cpu usage so I have no idea what the deal is here.

does anybody else get this?

I am painfully aware that there are performance problems in the client with regards to CPU usage. I'd like to sort it out some time, but I don't really feel it is the most urgent aspect of the game needing improvement at this point. :)

As for the RAM usage, on the other hand, you shouldn't worry too much. The 270 MB usage you're seeing is simply the virtual memory allocated by the JVM to the heap -- that is, virtual memory and not necessarily real memory. Java's two-stage generational GC also lends itself rather well to the VM system and to good swapping behavior, so I don't think there is much reason to worry about it just from that. (Whatever I may have to say about Java as a language, the JVM is not completely incompetently designed)

Yeah, when I visited Blaccy's farm (while he was still living there), I was getting a bit of graphical lag, despite having an x800 GTO graphics card, which you would think would be more than sufficient for something like this (despite being outdated by today's standards), and an Athlon 64 x2 4600+ CPU.

(I'm guessing you aren't using opengl or anything?)

Did you notice that something is rescaling the graphics? That takes time (and looks bad :P). It's always the case here except in fullscreen, but if I found a way to make it more blindingly obvious: If I try to reduce my windows resolution to 800x600 while H&H is open and in windowed mode (NOT fullscreen), VPU Protect activates. If I then return to a higher resolution, H&H's window size changes to the same size as the desktop resolution (WTF?), but it isn't on top of everything else, and it looks like crap because of the scaling: It scales all the graphics up (or down) to the window size.

VPU protect was also triggering when I did :fs 0 after being in fullscreen, resulting in the H&H window being similar FUBAR and my having to close it and start it back up again.

ahh i definitely think it should be atleast slightly fixed so that it runs a little nicer. it makes it hard to test the game when it wont run very well :X

Well, you type :fs 1 to get to it, and :fs 0 to get back to windowed, but for me it triggers VPU protect when I go back to windowed, and beware that it may not even work - RaptorJedi got a black screen and had to reboot his computer to get H&H to work again when he tried to use fullscreen. I'm lucky that it even works, I guess. :P

I think this is a fairly high priority problem. At least is is for me.

This morning I have harvested the same wheat field twice times, made bread and eaten about half of it, converted the same vats of leather into equipment twice, killed foxes and ate their sausage and... the wheat is still in the field, the fox pelts are not on the drying racks and what was in my inventory has vanished, all because of the CPU at 100% problem. This is grinding at it's finest. I am getting to use the very same raw materials over and over to get learning points but not new resources.

But it's making the game close to unplayable. I don't mind the jolting back and forth time travel, it's the way my mouse goes wonky when the CPU usage is high, which is starting to be most of the time, and the way the whole darn game locks around twice an hour. I am having to go in and out of H & H like I'm in a revolving door. Loading is not exactly quick.

If this could be a priority soon, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, D

Update: now it's locking within five minutes of my logging on and my mouse is wonky to begin with. Definitely unplayable.

*sniff*

I've been organizing people to come and farm and mine with me and everything and now I can't play anymore!!
