Sticky notes & brand marks

Postby Ikor » Wed Aug 17, 2011 12:46 pm

Hi, all.

I really would like to see sticky notes implemented in the game. It could really help organize village life and communicate with other players.
Recipe: Parchment (with a message) + Bone glue = Sticky note
Sticky note could be attached on a liftable object or a structure object. Right click on an object with a note in "hand", attach menu will appear. Click "Attach" and wait while process complete. Old notes will be removed when attaching a new one. Message will appear in a pop-up window on mouse over container/object.

Other thing I'd like to see is brand marks. It works similar to sticky note but it can be "attached" only on unbranded items and objects. Brand mark is produced on equipment, inventory and liftable objects with quality by using a branding iron. Branding iron contains user message and in-game ID (set by the server) which duplicates on an objects. Users could post their brand mark IDs on a forum to prove their crafted objects authentic. Branding iron should be made from steel. I think it's best for now to make brand marks unremovable. But there's an option to make quality of branding iron define efforts needed to remove it in future.
It could help trade and to track (stolen) goods.

Thanks for reading this.

Expanding on the branding idea:
This is really an idea for making forging of any type of brands possible in a non-anarchic way, and could be used with any kind of labelling (watermarking labels, making wax/clay seals, coin presses etc.).

When you make a branding iron, you get a dialogue window where you have to toggle any number of squares in an array (here 5x5) into a more or less associable pattern, and also supply an unique text string of characters to match the pattern. To the buyer of your branded goods, only the text is visible, and any number of branding irons can be made with the same text, as long as the array pattern matches.

How to forge a brand:

- brute force:* (not very feasible with a branding iron with a cost of two steel, but maybe more so for a wax seal or even more for a paper watermark)
The larger the array, the harder it is to forge, possibly the array has different dimensions for different branding methods, or even quality of materials.
- clever guessing: try the more recognizeable patterns first, e.g. those that match the letters of the cyrillic alphabet.
- industrial espionage/turncoats:
A more feasible way of ruining a Brand, this will happen when the secret is shared on some forum, and some unfaithful lackey spills the secret to the enemies.
- Abibas/Pepci scams:
Make a brand that is pretty similar to the desired brand. (e.g. Bottlemech Barley Beer, or some CAPS SheNaNIgans)
Pretty easy to discover if you know the original stuff, but may fool the noobish or the careless.
Preferably stupid stuff like adding whitespace to the end, or substituting capital "i" for lowercase "L" is somehow ruled out.

*EDIT: to clarify, I was thinking that the material cost would be spent upon clicking the "Make Brand" button, regardless of the array matching the unique text string or not, so you can not make a bot for running through the 2^25 = 33.5 million combinations, maybe leaving a (theft) scent if you try to forge an already existing text string

Brand marks could create new kind of vandalism - grief-branding, i.e. random brand marking of someone's possessions with your branding iron.
I suppose it could be eliminated by making branding process more complex. For example branding iron should be heated in kiln to produce marks.

An open fire would be enough.

Regarding sticky notes, I agree that such an item would be useful. I made a very similar suggestion a long time ago: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=556&p=4678#p4678

Free forums are great, but yeah, I agree an in-game bulletin board or other system for leaving notes for other villagers is sorely needed. Hopefully Salem (and thus HnH) will see this launch.
