Trees self reproduction

Postby Numisi » Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:33 pm

Large areas of forest are usually cut down for wood, but no one plant new trees to repopulate it, so new players, that can't plant a tree for the complexity of the task, as forced to make too long trips only for some boards, and building a house becomes an odyssee. I think it could be a good idea if, at least in the forest terrain, there would be a tree spawn, so the forest continuously self regenerate. This would be (realistic too) useful, and wouldn't create problems, because chopping down a tree is matter of seconds, planting a new one, when it happens, is matter of hours.

I don't think this game is ever going to have a shortage on trees, since we aren't farming for buckets anymore.

This was actually implemented for a short while but got removed again because it placed saplings in wrong spots. Loftar just never had the time to fix the placement algorithm.

I bet OP went against all the best advice in the game and spawned at a charter stone.

This was an issue back in W2 before you could spawn somewhere in the wilderness. Back then you HAD to spawn at the central charter stone and you could walk for hours before seeing a tree. (This was before I started playing, so I'm only recounting history as explained by others.)

I like the idea...its logical that a forest would regrow trees if they're not all cut down. if they're all cut down then it wouldn't be a forest anymore though...

its true there will never be a true shortage of trees, but I have been through areas that only had 5-10 trees on a full minimap area(I always keep my minimap zoomed out). if forests respawned some trees it would make some of the more tedious parts of the game not so much of a grind. things that should probably affect trees sprouting would have to include available space, distance from other trees, distance from buildings, and time since last trees in the area were chopped.

not sure how all this would be programmed, but trees need space to grow when planted so it should be the same with sprouts. also it would make no sense for a tree to sprout 50 tiles away from the nearest tree(atleast without a squirrel around to hide nuts). would make things difficult if a tree sprouted right outside someone's door so maybe have no sprouts on claims? and of course a forest wouldn't regrow overnight so have a radius of a certain area if a tree was chopped recently a new tree wouldn't grow for 2-3 days(real days not game days).

@MagicMan not just charter stone areas, some noob started in my area not too long ago and has chopped down almost every tree in a small area(maybe 20X20) and just left the logs there. I took the logs to build things and left him/her a runestone asking why. I got no reply, but more trees kept getting chopped and left...

Please ... Not before the next world. Might give me something to do. ... and ... kinda like to see how the HnH world evolves without this. :)
(Provided the dev's (well, Loftar in this case.) are keeping some timelaps log of the general world data. ... Probably not.)

Only if grass tiles don't look like chunky baby vomit. More if a grass tile spawned, the grass would grow out from there, other than just randomly spawning, because patchy grass tiles are the most ugly thing ever.

I can give you two reasons: Trying to create a patch of grassland to spawn animals for hunting or taming OR someone that restarted a character and doesn't know about the new game rules.

A third reason could be a possiblity, but it's a stretch: someone is just trying to deforest the area for no particular reason or maybe just to make life difficult for others nearby. People usually will break up the logs, though, so they'll despawn leaving nothing for players to use to build with.

I just want to say this on tree regrowth: My only issue with this will be keeping unwanted trees under control. How do you keep wild trees from popping up in your tree farm? Otherwise, I'm all for this.
