This is a good point. They'd probably enjoy Unreal more.

Cause I mean you sure are paying for it right now, amirite?

The whole purpose should be testing and after some time putting out a version which could get them some money.
Well with community like that I doubt Salem will be any better... Shame for a good game.

not so...I'm a small time programmer(never made anything this big, mostly console stuff) and anytime I made a game me and a few friends would test it, I would tweak it til I thought it was as good as it gets then we'd play it for hours(once even a full weekend with 3 short breaks for food). I've never made a dime off of any of my games.

the purpose of designing/building a game isn't to make money, its to make a game that you think is perfect. think of pretty much every major game release, there is always something awesome you love but theres that 1 thing you just hate...make your own game change that thing you hate. there are many companies that are all about money, and they just shoot out games. then there are independent game makers who work on something for years because its what they like doing. if they want to go for the money they can, but they're choosing to work on the game. respect thier choice!

Who are you?
Two Swedish university students, Fredrik Tolf and Björn Johannessen, who decided to create a game to our liking in our spare time. We hope you will like it.

Looks like it's more just a hobby to me ;). Granted it's something i would gladly pay to play.

They are going to make Salem which is going to be free to play but as I read with buyable items. Meaning they will have to make game better and more appealing to players to get some money from it. As for now Salem doesn't look like it will be up to HnH and even HnH is not a best one (500-1000 playerbase??? and number that know this game is a lot lot higher). It's just ain't fun to play in community like that. And a lot of people doesn't have fun with perma death as well. Only 500-100 players find a lot of fun here?

For clarifications, Haven and Hearth is their hobby and donation is entirely optional and won't get you anything game breaking...well you probably won't get anything other than pride than you are helping them out. Salem is their salary and it is not something that they like to put priority over Haven and Hearth. I'm not sure what kind of game or system you are looking for, Nummy, but there is a good chance you won't find it here.

Also from my personal experience, Freemium game are not quite up to par for some of the indie games that I've played. There is a good chance that I spent more on these indie games just to encourage them further with their development even if I no longer play.

Honestly, the game isn't for everyone. It's unforgiving and alot of people can't handle dying, nothing wrong with that despite how much they get made fun of on the forums for it. But if you have problems with the systems of permadeath, open pvp, even more so right now when there really isn't a risk to killing random noobs. You should probably save your efforts arguing here and move on.

For now...

Honestly, we don't hate new players here. It's just how the game plays right now. Join it or wait till Jorb & Loftar can put more time into fixing the issues. We won't hold it against you when (if) you come back. In fact, some of the longest vets of the game have quit playing altogether because of the issues in the game. Things just aren't good right now. Those that didn't play in w3 and earlier (and probably even w4) just don't know what kind of game this can be. It will return to that time.

Also, C&I is a great place to brainstorm, but another thing we hate is people jumping in here like they understand the game and they've only played a couple of weeks. There's tons of old material that is on the dev list, and even more on the "want" list. If people can't be bothered to do a thorough search for the ideas they have, they deserve every harsh word pointed at them. Also, when people come in here and post ideas completely contrary to the philosophies and concepts the game is built upon, they're going not just get harsh words, they're going to get shat on mercilessly until they shut up or quit the game/community. There are multiple posts by Jorb (and a few by Loftar) about what this game is all about. If you can't be arsed to read them, then why should we be arsed to consider a half-baked idea, let alone read the post about it? (Except for the prodding we get to do to the poster for such poor Internetmanship.)

Finally: Just cause Minecraft does it that way doesn't mean everyone else does. Think of Minecraft as more a box of Legos and HnH--a true MMO--more like a reality show. With Legos, everyone needs their own box and you can pick and choose who you play with. With an MMO, you don't get to choose who you play with. You're thrown in with the rest of the cast of the reality show and you have to try and make your way through the season without getting kicked off the air. (Except that an MMO is much less scripted than a reality show! Yes, even WoW is less scripted than that, and it's nothing but a theme park ride.)
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Not online would this help with the lag issues on the main server but it would also make alot more people want to play them game. Minecraft does it and they are a extremely successful game and they ever have the game written in java like Haven and Hearth...

The player-base it still much too small for such an idea. Plus, private servers for a game like this.. isn't quite fitting.

And how do you know player base is too small? If you think that number showing online players is a measure I can tell you you are wrong. It's only a number players currently playing. Don't forget all those who already quit playing and some veterans and so on. Player base is much bigger than this number, but because community and current players playing is "bad" to play with, nobody plays anymore (read: game lost appeal).
