SINKHOLES!! When a mine collapses have a small chance that it leaves a big opening to the air above into which hapless cows could be driven, and provided they survive the fall you've got the nucleus of your cave cow breeding operation ready to go! Failing that, of course, you've sent some beef down to your miners. Of course there IS a tiny drawback to the idea of sink holes because everyone in the neighbourhood now can see into your mine from above and may use it as a midden...
Traditionally pit ponys were blindfolded and lowered using a winch. Now seriously, we need to have proper winches and baskets at the pit heads anyway. It'd look MUCH better if we had a crane of some nice primitive sort, using lots of logs, rope, glue, more rope, and so on. In fact, while we are at it, I think we have a serious need for a proper ventilation system into our mine. Cave-ins are fun, but real miners have to worry about firedamp and work in horrible heat. So couldn't we improve our mines by adding a system of internal doors that can be used both to increase ventilation and prevent our miners from suffocating, and to prevent explosions? Underground explosions are very common. Where you find coal and stuff like that you also get dangerous gasses seeping through cracks in the ground. The first sign you get is when your lights all go out. If you can't make it to the exit ladder in the dark you are gonna die down there. Oooh! And we need canaries! Although this being Northern Europe I am sure it would be more practical to implement crows or sparrows - like rats but rather more difficult to catch as you need a birding net! - and then make a cage out of sticks to transport the bird in.
An added bonus would be that you can teach crows to talk, if you are very, very patient, so we could set up sentry crows that would announce when strangers were in the area. And they could be handy for flying messages too, I suppose. Although you might have to add pigeons to the game for good realism, but it's all good because pigeons are quite good eating if you can get enough of them. Which means now we have real incentive to develop falconry. You can use falcons to bring down pigeons to make pigeon pie and you had better just in case the pigeons you see are your enemies sending messages.
Mind you, if we are going to have sinkholes that lead to cave systems and mines underground could we please have quicksand on sandy beaches? They would be a fun way for noobs to hunt! Just run like hell and then turn sharply to the side just after you pass the quicksand so that the boar runs into the quicksand and gets stuck!! At that point the noobs get to bash the boar to death if they have a stick in their inventory, but it's gonna take lots and lots and lots of bashes, much worse than trying to kill one with a q12 sling and marksman 8, and in order to bash it you have to get close enough that it could gore you, but that's not the most dangerous part. Trying to skin and butcher the piggy after you kill it would be incredibly dangerous. You could easily get trapped in the quicksand too. Luckily the devs have already got ropes in the game so you equip the rope and click on some nearby tree so with luck, if you do get stuck, one of your friends will log in and you can pm them to please hurry down to the beach and haul you out before you either drown or die of hunger when your stamina runs out...
Which reminds me, why can't we tie up boats? It seems like very time I leave a boat on the bank of a river and wander inland for an hour or two the darn thing has drifted off by the time I get back. It's practically inevitable. I mean, every single time. You'd think maybe there was a high tide or something coming along and floating them off. But there isn't. The devs never did give us river flooding although we asked for that ages and ages ago. I s'pose it could be a little difficult to arrange such repeated radical changes of the map without using up a lot of memory.
OOH! Scary thought... What happens if you have a sinkhole into your mine and then the river floods and it runs down into the sinkhole? You could get trapped in a flooded mine!! You wouldn't drown but you'd be in an air pocket somewhere and the air slowly running out and the crow in your cage cawing and cawing and fluttering its wings while you desperately try to hack your way to another tunnel of the mine in case that leads to a way out that isn't flooded.
I think I am going to teach MY albino cave cows to be semi-aquatic so that they can swim and then I'll just ride out of the flooded mine. It sounds much more practical than trying to breed the cave bats strong enough to fly you out...
