hah, maybe an underground race, a different choice of character for players, and an underground eco system, then you could really make use of the night day belief thingy, make the nights shorter up top,

How about just a Dwarf Fortress MMO, then?

Meh. They neither one live up to the glory that is the Dwarf Fortress. Maybe one day they shall approach it, each in their own way.

never played dwarf fortress, my genre is early to mid 90's

used to run a private uo server once upon a time :D, after the devs ruined it of course, custom mapping things like island fortresses, etc, super fun

Every indie sandbox MMO is either a Minecraft or DF rip-off. Didn't you know that?
