Growing trees and forests

Postby Sylwira » Sat Feb 04, 2012 4:25 pm

In archive there's a topic about spawning trees, I think it's good idea but I'd like to suggest something more:
First - trees should be growing. It's unnatural that there are only fully grown trees, there should be at least three phases of tree growth. For example the smallest gives 1-3 branches (and disappears after collecting?), medium around 5 branches and few blocks after cutting and third as it is.
Second thing about spawning: It should be a little different then suggested earlier. Each fully grown tree sometimes tries to spread on certain area around it, but the more treas are around the spot, the less chance that the tree will sprout. This would work more like in nature - in thick forests new thees have little chances to appear because there's not enough sunlight and water for them to grow. This way new trees will grow mostly on forest borders (like it is in nature).
There's also might be a very small possibility of a tree sprouting from a seed, that someone threw away.
Also a little suggestion about graphics: Birch Tree is too round and thick, it should be more irregular, transparent and willowy.

And apart from trees, why there aren't any flying birds? I like birds, it's lonely without them ;)

Now think what happens if every single tree is being worked with. Every single map area gets loaded. THINK.
Also, trees got their phases of growth.

Spreading should happen very rarely, so there wouldn't be that many of those small trees. Maps has to reload when you cut a tree, then why not when new one appears?
Growing should not be a problem. There are so many plants already growing... And it don't have to be every tree to be processed while spreading, it can choose randomly a tree from an area...

I am THINKING but I'm not a game maker so I don't know all mechanics, and it's not up to me to think precisely how it could work. It's just a suggestion and it's up to creators of the game to determine if, or how they can do this, of course if they would like the idea.

Trees were spawning for a short while in world 3, but it got axed because they were spawning where they couldn't grow up. I guess there was never time to fix that issue so it never got reimplemented.

Oh, I'm new here so I didn't know. So it is possible :)
I wonder what's the problem then... Forageable objects are spawning and i think they never do this in strange places.

problem is a tree needs a 5x5 area of nothing blocking it. so a loooot of trees spawned next to walls, houses, rocks, other trees or other stuff that prevented growth so very quickly we got a lot of trees at a very early growth stage that were never gonna grow. had to axe it before it got too bad and the devs just dont have the time needed to fix it.

5x5? Maybe it was changed, because looks that stem takes one area and I can build on all areas around it...

christ.... read my damn post.

recap: if anything with a hitbox exists in the 5x5 area around a tree it stops growing.

Ok, don't be so edgy. It just seemed strange for me that a tree can't grow next to a wall, when you can put a wall next to a tree. I thought that maybe in earlier versions trees really used area 5x5 and you couldn't place anything closer to them, it would be logical then, that they couldn't grow as well.
