Really, Only noobs live on the shore because of the immenent raiding. So many people live and hunt inland.

No ,turn map into big isles and continents, and make more types of boats. Perhaps it would be cool if there was a type of water passable only by a big expensive vessel. I remember when I once spawned on an isle I couldn't leave for days and days. (of course I was a newb by then, so I didn't get Ender and even hunting rabbits were problem to me then not to mention boats that require bone saws)
Once I finally made a boat I had great fun over exploration and mapping terrain (to find myself on the world map).

The term you want is being a "back-seat moderator". As for the topic, I say nay. Having less "water" would mean even more carrying of the boat to get across land to reach a river you couldn't drive to. In W3, we started on a mass road system. The problem was, once you hit a river, you obviously can't cross it in a wagon, unless you break out the raft. A fix for this, would be to implement some sort of bridge system.
