Better inventory management

Postby Xcom » Sun Oct 07, 2012 6:35 pm

Could we maybe make the seedbags open into one unified seed inventory and make them accept carrots, beets, onions and grapes. Farming is hard as it is and using LCs to sort and replant just sounds like a stupid workaround.

Sorting of the inventory space could then easily be done with some UI modifications similar to the trashkan button on ender. It just seams like a waste of a useful item except that its a pain in the ass to use in the current form its in. I know its possible to make scripts to sort the seed bags with the current format we have right now, but that just sucks ass including the fact that you can only use the seed bags on only half the farming plots.

I'm posting this in some hopes that someone might have a solution to use the ender client to unify the inventory windows in some magical way. Or maybe its just all server side and cant be done.

We've been complaining about these horrible seed bags since they were put in.

I think everyone has always wanted better inventory management as well. The system in place is just frustrating the way that it is. =(

It's true. I've even read the original thread where the devs implemented seed bags, and Avu* was already complaining about them.

Hmm - i use a char with 2 sacks, an LC and 2 cups for farming - haven't been using seedbags for more than six month. The only use i see in them is to give seeds to another player...and even that i do with small chests. ;)

For a game that is heavily invested in items there are few tools that can really help with the item management. The Shift + Alt/Ctrl scroll are the only 2 tools we have. Its a real shame that item management is so pore. Simple fixes like sorting inventory inside a container would greatly improve the feel of the gameplay.

But the workaround on placing some types of materials in signs is another big problem. Containers of 64 isn't enough for most instances. The fact you have to cheat and place items into signs is just a bad workaround. Could be nice to have stockpiles with massive inventory spaces for mass storage or something similar.

Other bigger issues are how you cant move or interact in the world when the player is holding items. That causes all kind of annoying issues. A simple example is when you need to top off the cauldron when you have a full inventory. Any coder wizard that knows how to fix this in the client would be doing a world of help. I think its possible to fix this client wise though, unsure how it would affect the server with players walking around with items in there hands.

Other issues like you cant swap items directly in your equipment window. This is just irritating but would be nice to have fixed.

And the most biggest monster of them all. Item swapping only happening from the last opened window. Half the time you don't know what window the UI can or cant swap between. Most of the time you have to reopen windows several times to figure out how you can transfer items. Transfers should just happen based on the window you have clicked on last instead of last opened. Maybe because this is a server update issue it would probably be a pain to send server the update on what window you clicked on but it would create a world of ease.

Stockpiles have been suggested a million times over. No point in really elaborating on them further.

seedbags are awesome, with 2 travel sacks and an inventory of seedbags you can harvest 100 tiles or more of a seed crop without stopping to sort replant or store seeds elsewhere :)

but to continue with the point of the thread, i agree, we should be able to do better on inventory ergonomics especially when it comes to farming
