Actually only legionaries would have used horse hair. Centurions would have use bright plumed feathers from peacocks or other rare birds. Centurion helmets also tended to be embossed with silver or ornately gilded if important enough.
However thank you for bringing up the point of the two different helmets. I thin there is room for both. Haven certainly need more variety.
