Coppicing trees

Postby brohammed » Fri May 31, 2013 11:12 am

I think it was in response to the mass wicker-basketting and bucketing of yore, and the subsequent deforestation, when jorbtar introduced tree regrowth to compete with grass growing. Only it was bugged and resulted in lots of stunted shrubs due to the tree growth/proximity rule, and so it was removed.

Perhaps for the rewrite, trees could coppice from stumps. It's what was done historically, to manage woodland. Chop down a tree, wait 25 years, and there's a new tree where the old one was, no replanting required. Firs don't coppice though, they do need replanting.

Not sure how raising tree quality works but that's pretty good. It might require no planting but quality doesn't increase either making a nice balance for those bulk farmers.

I love the idea. Sometimes it gets annoying when you don't have a farmer alt (me) and have to go far to get trees.

Linked inversely to soil quality perhaps, since trees grow on infertile soil (on fertile soil they are outcompeted by boring grasses and things).

There's a lot of scope for reworking the terrain generator and mapping in general.

I don't know if trees should regrow from stumps, but I do think if there are trees in an area more trees should grow. I live in a rural area and I have to clear small trees and whatnot from the back of my yard atleast twice a year or it starts looking like a forest back there.

just ps on the back of my yard- its near a forest so trees vines and all sorts of running plants are always sneaking up
