Mining safety/ light source value

I think that when mining you should have to be with in x amount of distance from a given light source. Attempting to mine in pitch black should return the message 'It's too dangerous to mine in the dark.'

I think this would be a good idea because light sources would once again have value. You even get a torch when you create your character...so Jorb must have intended for use to USE it, right?

Now I know everyone wants to play with full-bright and you still could! Clients let you see in total darkness but it doesn't make sense for your character to be able to see.

I also propose that darkness (night time darkness) lower your perception by 2 or 3 points unless near a light source or holding a lit torch.

I know this will be unpopular but tell me what you think, anyway.

There is already a mining helm that can at as a light source. The problem that i see with your idea is that mining requires a bunch of str, so most people use bear capes to mine. It may not technically be a problem, but with metal being as hard as it is, it is greater incentive to bot up your str (as if we needed any more reasons to fep bot). Some layer 1 nodes are too hard to mine at 150 str

Well there are light sources besides the helm. Torches and tiki torches.

While i think your suggestions are nice in theory, the fact that you can still turn of darkness would make these changes just an annoying gimmick. I'm all for making darkness a full feature that can't be removed with clients. Would be fun. But then again things like 'show things on minimap' should be removed also because whats the point of darkness if you can just see everyone and everything on your minimap. there are to many things that don't fit together and creating perma darkness would make a huge mess.

terribly sorry, I'd have bumped this topic had I known. I'm going to have to agree with you on making darkness a server sided feature that clients cant change. Perhaps the server would refuse give you all the tile information or something of the sort? Or make it be played from the browser where those sort of things are controlled by the website? Its java, isn't it?
