Departing Critique

Postby Geddian » Mon Nov 18, 2013 12:33 am

I want to thank the developers for their efforts. I had fun in the world of hearths, and I've made at least a couple of new friends. Got up to building steel in my first run, which apparently does not always happen. Normally I'd just leave but I feel it's only polite after playing a free game to give my reasons behind giving it up, at least for a world or two.

More or less? The brick wall killed it for me. A requirement for safety for sure, and a measure of your progress certainly, but it says something that between taming animals, building a stone mansion/cellar and finding nodes, the brick wall was unbearably tedious. Worst part is there's no way to adequately store that many bricks except in very obvious piles of unmade cornerposts, which no doubt got me raided when I started actual construction. I don't fault the raiders entirely, they only took or destroyed the brick wall mats, but it was clear I'd never get it finished at that point.

My suggestion is to simply replace bricks with stones, and make it a stone wall. I think stone castle walls would be more aesthetically pleasing and they would certainly be easier to build on the fly without stocking up materials, while still being limited by their requirements of iron and steel.

I agree and disagree.
Brick walls was horrendous and I despised every moment of it.

A better idea would be to make it less demanding on the bricks, which it already is pretty lenient and give you the ability to make stretches of wall longer than one tile, so you don't have to get carpal tunnel.

I'd say that building palisade in early world should be failry easy achievable and with that you get temporary safety until first palibashers come out. Thats not soon and between the time first basher is up, you should be able to dig enough bricks to do the walls, which are the defensive priority. Maybe not that easy for a hermit if he is doing all the things for himself, but then again, more people > easier life.

I dug like 4000 bricks in one day while, at the same time pearling I got 32 pearls in that same day.
It's not hard, just annoying.

I agree a stone wall option should be added in addition to brick.

As a good rule though once you start building that wall dont stop till it's done.
