Most people that are told to come along or else generally just pull the power, or they run away at their first chance. Most crimes are done by alts, so I'm going to go and make a bet they wouldn't give a flying shit if you killed them or not.

I'm against this tying up business. What's stopping people from knocking out and shackling a innocent newb and just fuck around with him? What's stopping people with a rope from tying people up over and over again, this is ridiculous. If you want to do this, just make it so we can pick up unconscious bodies. Yeah, they will run away again but it will be easier then us saying "or else" which will not work. Also, what's stopping the person from just hearthing when they are on trial? Or being carried for that matter. This is poorly thought out.

i love all the ideas! would be even better if we were to build a new house, bigger and with cells in it so we can keep dozens of players at once imprisoned. then add a way to "upgrade" the prison with dark rooms (without light) and light rooms (with candles burning 24/7) and an extra room where you can put new craftable objects in it (will explain later)
the dark room would get the players disorientated (obviously, as hes only seeing black) as long as he is closed into that room. the candles in the light room would have to be refueld every, say 24 rt-hours. the room would slowly but at a constant rate take stamina from the char (as hes not able to sleep), and eventually he would die. haha.
oh and we could decide whether we give them food or not! that way we could starve them to death hehe. or feed them frogs!

new crafts: they can be put into the free room. there are endless possibilities, but for the beginning we would need:
a bench, which would be made of water and board.

think of it. so amazing.

I'm with Adam. I don't like the idea of taking too much freedom from characters - dying is a setback, but at least you get to play. If you get caught, then... Well, you're at the mercy of another player until you're lucky enough to break free or go through all that and THEN get killed. But then there might be a way to make it workable; I imagine if anybody can puzzle a way around it, Jorb and Loftar can.

With suicide option, it could work. If you're not at 100% tradition, you may want to go along if you expect a fair trial. And even if you don't get one, it may give you time to push tradition to 100%.

Characters who broke the law in the newbie city on the Shattered Alliance UO shard (I wonder if there may have been more than one with this name), if caught by the guards and beaten up sufficiently, would be teleported into a jail where they would, rather than serving a set amount of time, be given a pickaxe and forced to break some amount of rocks into smaller rocks (really mining ore and feeding it to it with a pickaxe, for simplicity, since anyone can get a pickaxe and do that) before being released. Each successive time they were jailed, the jail time increased. They had a magical ball and chain attached to them which prevented any kind of magical teleportation or any other means of escape from the jail besides walking out, not that they could walk out on their own.

The jail was placed in a dungeon such that their friends could fight (or run) their way through a bunch of high-level monsters to reach it, and bust their jailed buddy out of prison if they wanted to, but there was no way to remove the ball and chain without mining ore and feeding it to it.

None of the other cities had NPC guards with this ability, however. Players generally had to enforce the law there, except that they could hire NPCs to patrol, who would attack enemy nations' members, monsters, murderers, etc.

okay, now i feel really uncomfortable with what i wrote before. i wanted to be ironic! did you actually believe me?
oh my. i dont like the idea, tbh i think its stupid (no offense). cant we just have our little world with ppl doing whatever they want then die, then respawn or recreate and thats that? i dont want that prison thing. reminds me of the real world.

That is a really, really good idea. Be able to hire an NPC to walk a certain route for a certain amount of time. After the time you hired him for is up, he could walk off. Hire-able NPCs could spawn with the same frequency as Bandits, perhaps. Or maybe even make you able to take them as slaves. Hell, we could use them to pull mail carts from city to city. I'm not sure if it would be better for them to be static members of the world (ie they have names, and remain forever once spawned until killed), or if it would be better for them to remain nameless and despawnable.
i guess they never miss huh

I like this. To make sure it's not abused, could cost steel coins?
EDIT:
Also if town claims are implemented, the number of guards you can hire should be based of the sq. footage of the claim.

I like this idea. It would seperate it from other MMORPGs. You could even have guards and jails!
