Hi Kenny,

This post might help in answering some of your questions. As usual, don't hesitate to ask further questions.

Below is an old post that was sent to Hermits who completed the application process. Each applied profession received a semi-personalized message with information pertinent to the role. For example, soldiers, Laborers, Farmers, and even Undecided/Unlisted applicants received similar letters. It is unclear if we will maintain this approach, let alone the content of the letters.

Vaku wrote:Hello [HERMIT EXAMPLE],

We received your oath to the Edelreich. We see that you have identified that being a Hermit is your preferred playstyle.

As such, we are willing to accept you into the Union of the Edelreich.

You will retain ownership of your hermitage.

Your hermitage will be considered an outpost of the Edelreich and will benefit from all protections allowed by the Constitution of the Edelreich, and your hermitage will remain outside the control of any village that is part of the union (No village can tell you what to do). Life for you will not change much more than that. When available, you can expect military aid as quick as resources will allow. The Union military serves to protect.

If you would like new or current citizens of the Edelreich redirected to your hermitage for purposes of changing your hermitage into a village, you must put in a separate request. Your request may be made at any time.
Requirements for Hearthling Immigration:
 Your Hermitage must possess a Village Idol
 You are responsible for the initial screening of individuals that you allow onto your Hermitage.
 When the appropriate population is reached, the Lawspeaker must complete the form on village admission found here: [REMOVED LINK]

If you want a Crossroad Tower for quick military response, which will be built on your property, you must put in a separate request. Your request may be made at any time.
Requirements for a Crossroad Tower:
 Your Hermitage must possess a Village Idol
 You must accept a survey of the location where you intend the tower to sit on your property.
 Maintain a “key alt” to allow military support to exit the tower when you make a request for them. You will possess the only key to the tower located on your property.

If you agree to the terms described in this message, reply to this message with such confirmation as “I agree.

If you do not want to be publicly welcomed for becoming a citizen, please specify “I do not want to be publicly welcomed” when returning your confirmation.

If you no longer want to join, reply to this message with such confirmation as, “I no longer want to join.

As a side-note, [HERMIT EXAMPLE], the above is the original automated message to players applying as hermits. What you would be agreeing to is an infant version of the Edelreich, which you may help to nurture and support towards more features (or variations of current ones). This is dependent on how committed you would like to become, and depends on how much you are willing to identify the Edelreich as part of your community.

Nice to meet you, and feel free to add me on Skype whether you agree to joining or not.

So as I've said, this is the old response message to applicants of the Hermit variety. Currently, we are not using this approach until we confirm the initial rules we want to operate under (And even then, we may decide not to use these messages). There is still a good deal of time for you or anyone else to join the talks, and greatly influence these decisions by either messaging jcm2214 or adding him through skype, with his username: sovietskya

It is not that we do not hear what you are writing on the forum, but (to my presumption) we understand each other better when speaking in real time.

Personally, I am running out of time to answer all your questions. If you would like, please respond, and/or reiterate some of you comments and concerns that are not satisfied.

EC is not joining, as we see no reason to. Ramones is just trolling. although individuals are free to, but as a village, it adds nothing to what we are doing or have done. Promoting peace isn't something we do, people are free to play how they wish, we just do it in one way, and most respect it and play how they want. that's how the game is and should be, and it isn't up to us to dictate how people should run their own towns, or hermitages, or how they should govern. If people need advice or want to understand how a town like EC runs, then we'd be happy to share information. For the most part, how we function isn't the play style of many who do play, which is fine!

The Edelreich is a decent idea, but very, very vague, it should be more organically grown, build up support slowly, build up constitutions and laws slowly as it builds. you cant write it all and then build it and expect people to just get on board with it as most wont trust what the motives behind it are, or whatever else. But as with most things, it needs clarity, and it needs people to feel theres something they can add and get something out of it, which sadly is greatly lacking. Perhaps for new players and hermits or smaller towns it might work, which is great, but beyond that, I can't see many others really going for it. But those issues can be worked on.

Edit: Just to be clear, it doesn't change my views on the overall idea, just saying you are better off with Emerald in it than out of it.

Ok, time to get serious and stop my shitposting and share my opinion on this whole thing.

I would be lying if I said I was against this whole thing; a large part of me want's this thing to work as it seems like a cool idea, but the reality is that I don't think it will. Large amounts of people trying to play together in this game never seems to work: the more people you have, the higher your risk factor for treachery and for crippling amounts of inactivity. Groups in this game require trust, and as soon as you decide to try to band together potentially hundreds of people, problems erupt. It's for this reason that so many other attempts at urbanization and civilization of the Hearthlands have failed, and the prime example is Brodgar and all the Brodgar spin-offs (3 this world?) that all ended up failing because people just stopped playing and others came to reap the benefits. It was a great idea that worked for a while, but eventually imploded due to inactivity and treachery, like this most likely will.

In addition, no large village would gain anything from joining this other than having the obligation to help when someone else gets in trouble; a responsibility the LS probably doesn't want to willingly take up. Because of this, you're most likely only going to get hermits, small villages and newbies, not quite the ideal group to be crusading around the Hearthlands preaching prosperity, nor the most trustworthy to continue playing through tough times.

The only way this would ever work would be to have a mastermind of recruitment, charisma and a born leader behind it, but considering the 6 walls of text thrown at me so far I'd say that's not the case (educated guess here).

Vaku and jcm, I respect the idea and will be watching this closely, but I'm afraid to say that things like this never seem to work out in this game. I've already placed a bet on the end date

Last year i knew a huge village of 11 memebers with a 400 x 400 claim (aprox) and composed of people with all specific roles (1 cooker, 1 farmer, 1 smither, 1 hunter, etc....). Our villages became trading parteners very soon. We got interested about this wonderful organization system and asked their LS "wow, how do you do to rule this village so nicely ?", his answer was simple: "we know each other in real life, i'm the LS and crafter, my wife is the silker, my brother is the hunter, my neighbour friend is the farmer, etc...)".

So, basically their secret to their efficiency and prosperty was based on the fact that they knew each other closely in real life, they trused each other, and they could communicate efficently inside and outside the game. Vaku and Jcm proyect requiers all this elements (if not more) to pull it out !.

But, like Nandez said before, you will not have recruits that meets this kind of requirements. All you will get will be sporadic noobie players that will join to get a free bear cape and bronze sword, just to get killed next week for trying to melee a bear with only 30 UA !.

Noob is just a veteran project. There are veterans of all kinds, the successful ones and the losers. Not every noob is an idiot. Many can be even better strategists and managers that many veterans, just do not know the specific strategies of H & H.
Noob is just a veteran project, and a project that is receiving adequate investment in a well organized village, can become an excellent team member.

The key word there is that they can. The entire reason this game has such a low player base is because so many newbies are deterred from playing very early from some event or just don't enjoy the game and end up quitting. The fact simply is that probably 90+% of noobs and hermits quit before having a brickwall or even really getting very settled, and a base of players made up of them would never work out.

even the most dysfunctional (to us)of towns actually can run very decently. you don't need to know people irl to be part of a village which functions, I certainly don't know anyone in EC irl, and likely chances, I never will, but we work as a group of people together. I've seen some towns where it's just a couple of people doing everything and theyre happy just doingwhat they do, and to bigger towns they would be considered noobish, but that's all they want to get from the game, theyre not looking for anything more. some are incredibly divisive but when you get to know the individuals within it, it functions for them, cause they enjoy the drama they seem to create for themselves. there's big towns which will recruit literally anyone, but because everyone is walled off or has their own little place somewhere the whole full trust factor isn't an issue. but all these styles are functional and work. perhaps not always on a long term basis, but it works.
