'digging' a canal is not simply just digging, there's a lot of engineering that needs to be thought up and devised for it to be plausible and successful.
When the US took over building the Panama Canal it took them 10 years and cost them almost
9 Billion US Dollars in today's standard, and the canal is just about obsolete for modern ships now.
My point is that it's not plausible for some hearthling to swing his shovel all day to dig a canal through an island.
