New player all alone preparing for the alpha

So I have been playing h&h for a few days trying to prepare myself for the alpha as best I can. I have been scouring the rivers by boat looking for player.
It has been a really odd experience scouring the ruins of what I imagine were once mammoths of industry with nothing to signify their existence but a large paved area, neglected crops, and a broken down oven or two.

Anyway I had a few questions I formulated during my travels I was hoping could be answered by anyone who feels like it.

1.Does anyone play the game anymore? I have gone for 2 days without coming across an online person, but due to active claims being around I figure people must of been on in the past 30 days. It is spooky.

2. I came across a strangely large personal claim when I first joined a couple days ago in that seemed to span for over a 100 screens east to west and was very thick. Is this a normal? How many players do you think would be required to have made such a thing?

I am trying to get a feel for how w7 is/was.
Feel free to throw in any stories of grand civilizations that used to exist, I love stories.

I don't have any grand stories. Hermit by nature. I know population has been decreasing and now with the new world looming, not many people are playing. I popped on for a couple months to get into the mind set again and have been taking time off so I don't get burnt out.

So in regards to the incredibly large claim, should I be in awe or is this normal?

There are 110 hearthlings playing.

sure the number went down the last days but there are still people playing active

there are large claims, even huge ones in the eyes of a newer player - they are made to protect resources or plain to keep idiots away (and with idiots players are meant who chop an amount of trees in one spot without building anything in a weeks span or just build their settlement right next to others without getting in contact or much worse build unprotected mineholes somewhere ... for an experienced player it's easy to setup a large claim (even without botting)

prolly people see you before you get aware of them and port away because they fear to get PKed - on the other hand the world is real big for that number of players being on the same time ...
