OK thanks for the explanation. I wasn't so clear on it because I was around last world. :)

who follows the same routes every day,
who never changes pace,
who does not risk and change the color of his clothes,
who does not speak and does not experience, dies slowly.

And you know this how?
We PM'd Jorb directly with instructions on how to repeat the bug

And I'm pretty sure we even went back later to edit the post and add more detail

and in the second case, the group even made sure they weren't using their main accounts when abusing it.

We all used our mains, though they're not amazing characters by any means

Good job at making shit up though

I think if anything this situation is proof that there needs to be instituted a proper punishment system for situations like this. Clearly the whole "eye for an eye" thing doesn't work when the offender has much less to lose than the victim, no matter how far the dev in question decides to take the punishment.
It worked back during the whole core thing, but in this case ainran had nothing to lose from pulling this off. No reasonable amount of dev effort will change that, either (except maybe for disabling their accounts or permanently damaging them in some significant way).

A character was lost by the abuse of a bug, this helped the devs improve the visitor debuff and the game improves further.

We are all part of the development of this fantastic game, it would help a great deal if people would see that rather than focusing on their own transient characters.

Ideally, if a bug is discovered, it's great if the person tells the devs directly. However, the abuse of the bug means whoever gets abused is in the position to report the bug.

Rather than arguing endlessly over what punishment is appropriate, focus on reward. Some substantial reward for notifying of bugs, of if you were abused by a bug and that brought it to light, the victim receives the reward. We want to find these bugs, that's the purpose of alpha.

Jorb and Loftar would have to spend a great deal less time on forum politics threads (and more time developing) if we could have a standardised bug reward system that bug abusers valued - the dev cape works great for some people, but obviously for some it is not sufficient.

Sadly, due to the competitive nature of the game, people do not or are unwilling to share your vision of the testing.

Ideally, if a bug is discovered, it's great if the person tells the devs directly. However, the abuse of the bug means whoever gets abused is in the position to report the bug.

It would be easier said than done since most of the time, the one that gets bug-raided, etc, doesn't know how the loophole or bug is.

Rather than arguing endlessly over what punishment is appropriate, focus on reward. Some substantial reward for notifying of bugs, of if you were abused by a bug and that brought it to light, the victim receives the reward. We want to find these bugs, that's the purpose of alpha.

One thing I do agree on is that there is not much of an incentive to reporting bugs. It also has to outweight the reward of destroying their enemy faction. Of course punishment still needs to remain since people can and will try to go out of their way to get an edge on the competition regardless by said exploitation.

And that even if you play by the "rules" and report bugs without using them to screw someone else over you're not guaranteed any reward. cmon jorbtar it's been 3 crash-inducing bug reports now :(

Though I do suppose granting players rewards for bug reports can get annoying and waste dev time, so fair enough.

Damn, not even 1 cape for reporting 3 crash inducing bugs?

Yeah, it's mostly that their fancy logging systems remove the need for autists like me to help them figure out what happened whenever the server crashes.
We are being replaced by machines. :|
Anyway, sorry for derailing.

I remember a skype talk that one player (warri?) reported a walljump bug and didn't receive anything, and I found all this stuff arbitrary because there were people who got capes for firepit bugs or simple archery reports.

Capes aren't even that great. The reward should scale with the severity of the report, something like a dragon helm or a thane's ring in the range of q10 to q250, according to how important the fix was. I'm sure that would motivate more people to report and make them at least consider not exploiting the bug first.
