The boxes have to be lined up almost exactly. I've had some similar issues.

lol i have hearths outside to port them out but the whole reason i built this cellar was 2 PUT HEARTHS in the cellar so that when i port back on a horse i dont have to hearth them out

I did it ages ago with a wild horse, not realising it would be stuck, I just left it in there until it despawned. :D

I think it's pretty ridiculous that a horse can climb up and down a rope ladder and yet can't manage the stairs! :P

Does the same thing happen when you try to take it down to the cellar instead or does it work fine? I have a cellar positioned the same way and I can take animals up/down it with no issue.

Maybe you have something like a cupboard too close to where that shield is at? The hitbox could be getting in the way.
