Game Rename

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Game Rename

Postby kobnach » Thu Jul 09, 2009 7:20 pm

The game doesn't really suit its name, what with all the conflict and thieving. The developers' stated goals (balance between theft/griefing and security/building) suggest that this is intentional. Perhaps the game would attract more appropriate people (those who want the kind of game the developers want to build) if it were renamed.

Please post suggested names here.

...i personally like the name Haven and hearh, and think that changing it is likely to have much in the way of positive effects.

It would be a great name - if there was any haven in the game.

You sound quite bitter.
Regardless of the fact people can commit crimes, and only lose say... a days worth of effort getting their character to be able to commit those crimes, lothar and jorb have stated that they do intend to make it harder to commit crimes. While it may be something of a roller-coaster with it getting harder and easier rapidly to commit crimes, i have no doubt that it will work out in the end.

To me, i envision a chaotic/lawless world with towns that are haven's from the wilderness and thieves... that's more or less how i envision haven and hearth's future when i hear the name.

Off-topic: I've seen you do it a few times, and it bothers me. His name (screen name) is Loftar, not Lothar. :) Thanks.

Listening to people I enjoy playing with telling me they intend to quit does that to me.

I think we had a decent balance before the latest update... because I could keep my tools. Sure, I can rebuild my tools from scratch, starting with a rock and a branch - but that's NOT fun. It's even less fun if they get looted/destroyed again before I finish the rebuild. Before the get-behind-objects update, keeping tools was very difficult- a cabin fits 8 large objects, and things outside could easily be made inaccessible by malicious wanderers. But between the behind-objects update and the recent no-vaults update, I was able to build more than just learning points.

Now we're worse off than we were before, except that griefers need to be a bit higher level to maliciously destroy sausage makers etc. (They need some strength as well as tresspass.)

I'm taking this as evidence that the center point, the developers' desired end state, is between the two points - whereas I feel that the point we had _before_ the current update is the minimum needed for any concept of haven.

You may feel differently because of your combat stats. I doubt that most newbie alt thieves can survive long enough to get to wherever you are living and storing your stuff. Unfortunately I didn't start play as early as you did, and can't afford to live online - so there will always be many people better fighters than me, with all that this implies.

Actually it's more i don't have that much of worth to steal [atleast not worth the day or so of effort to get the skills to steal it, since i could hunt em down afterwards]. However someone did grief the camp that i live near recently. But it's not like it would be hard to find a scent of mine somewhere and kill me now, regardless of my stats/skills, while i'm offline.
But no.. people have built things infront of my place many times.. some of which were indestructable objects and sealed me in, quite a few times. Apparently thats fun to some people. Atleast now i can get out, even if people can get in to kill me while i'm offline now.
Don't get me wrong, i'm extremely worried that someone will just off me while i'm offline..
However i think it takes atleast the trespassing, vandalism and theft skills in order to steal from me atm... So i should hope that thieves would atleast spend some time getting those skills.

Trespass+Theft+Vandalism together are way cheaper than the ability to make steel, or even decent quantities of wrought iron. There's too much delay built into the process, particularly getting to a decent metal production rate. I'm pretty sure the _efficient_ way to acquire steel in the new rules involves alts, macros, and handing the loot over to one's real character. The flip side of this is that one is extremely unlikely to last 2.5 RL days unrobbed, which will increase the number of folks stealing it, making it still harder to produce.

Silk may have the same problem. It's those long vulnerable stages where one needs to have the material lying out on permanent objects, not in an inventory. Much depends on how plentiful silk moths prove to be.

Add to this the need to keep materials in one's inventory - e.g. while building up to 5 silk fibers, or 6 bars of steel - and it gets pretty difficult to play normally - far better to just go steal something.

*sigh*
