General principle

Postby RiverPhoenix » Fri Jul 10, 2009 6:37 pm

Hello :)

I would like to suggest a general principle for future updates.

When an update is made teh implications are taken into account and if it looks like an update will help destroy what has been created by players then delay that update until an update that will fix the problem is made first.

I am finally bored of trying to put our civilised little village back together again because some update meant that a bunch of barbarians have been able to come along and smash everything up - again.

It was quite clear that allowing object destruction would lead people's stuff to be wrecked and a solution had been long proposed... but no, object destruction was the first update and (I presume) walls and other ways of locking up long worked at tools and resources will update later. This is not the way to build a civilisation and unless you want it to be a Scandinavian version of Mad Max then something needs to change.

Maybe it is that you get too caught up in cool stuff or else you enjoy pissing people's hard work up against a wall, either way you've lost another civilised person and frankly the chances of newbies ever having somewhere that might allow them to get some idea of what the hell is going on before they give up in frustration is shrinking ever closer to zero.

Have fun and best of luck to you but if you ever make it I'll be nothing short of astounded.

River :)

They just dont get it do they? What's coming will blow the petty amount we've been losing out of the water.

The guy has been playing for say at most 2 weeks and that's what he gets. I am starting to doubt Jorb wants anyone to play the game at all.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

I know it isn't them directly. And i am not going to argue about it again. Jorb even told me the fewer people the better for him.
Thing is that once the game died out to say 20 people and it becomes gold noone even wants to play due to the bad reputation.

If we can't even provide players a place to play, then what's the point of playing.

I apologize if my answer seemed callous, it wasn't meant to be. I'm of course sad to see people go, but at the same time I know I'm doing my best making the game better, not worse. More playable, not less so. I can't hope to do much better than that. Maybe we made a bad call, but I'm pretty sure we'll make worse mistakes down the road. And, really, the maps are getting swiped anyway.

I don't want the discussion to turn into an exchange of simple assertions, but I can't help but feel that expectations are... somewhat skewed.

... oh, and you'll have your walls in a couple of hours or so. :)

Could you give us something that functions like a ridge, but is destroyable. So we can make places that look like they have height to them.

Glad to hear you folks haven't been totally discouraged. It was sad to see the silkworms more or less ignored because of the demise of vaults. They were way cool, and I think I was somehow more upset because of that; after all, if the game was lousy and going nowhere, I'd hardly care if it was also unplayable ;-)

And yes, I realize the server reset will change everything. But meanwhile, I really like building my little space in the current world.

Giggedy! And just in time for my birthday.

I can't blame one for getting snippy / callous / etc. over all the hubbub, but I suppose drama is to be expected when the rug is practically pulled out from under people (whether they were expecting it or not).

As for the bit about moths being ignored - I dunno about the other settlements, but Bottleneck residents were all engaged either in active moth-hunting or constructing chests to aid in their cultivation for a fair chunk of the past two days. I, for one, enjoyed the excuse to go running about all over the wild and tripping over hermitages and whatnot. I s'pose it's been overshadowed on the forums, though, particularly given most of the announcements topic (I'd wager, anyway) has been dedicated to questions about straw baskets spontaneously exploding and the like.
