'Build' button checks inventory

Postby Machenoid » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:50 pm

When you click the build button, the game checks your inventory if you have the necessary materials. If you do, the game moves the materials from your inventory to the object you're building. This way with far fewer clicks, you can get to building whatever much faster. If the player doesn't have any matching resources in his inventory, the build button functions like normal.

Example:
The player has 4 planks in his inventory and is making a cabin. He clicks the 'build' button and all the planks in his inventory are instantly moved to the cabins' plank amount. With 8 wood blocks in his inventory now, he clicks build on the cabin again, but since the cabin only needs 5 wood blocks, it only takes 5 wood blocks from his inventory, leaving behind 3.

edit - this could also only happen when the player shift-clicks the build button, or clicks on a check box next to it and then hits build.

I think this is a bad idea. I don't want things moving from my inventory just because I'm checking to see what something is.

Edit: misread. Then I suppose it's okay.

I agree with Malikus for the moment. It's bad practice to assume anything about user goals, even if the assumption is something like "I want to add resources to the thing I'm building".

I do think that building should be sped up, so how about this: if you shift-click (with nothing stuck to the cursor) on a building structure, all the items in your inventory that could fit get moved over.
Surprise.

I frequently use the build action to check requirements.

I also less frequently carry a bunch of branches around with me and make numerous fire building sites with one branch in each, previously for fences, in the future for tracing out the path of walls or other future developments.

This feature would disrupt those habits

I think this feature would be fine with a SHIFT right click.

Yes, or a check box next to the build button that makes the button act like i suggested.
