A quest to guide you through claims/palisades

Postby Ozzy123 » Thu Nov 21, 2024 10:17 pm

Heya,

Since the steam launch and the new world the official haven&hearth discord welcomed many new players, most of the questions that they have revolve around claiming land and securing your base with a paliasde, I think everyone would agree that there should be an intro quest that'd guide you through claiming land and building a palisade, perhaps after getting yeomanry or something, claiming land quest would require you to gather mats for the claim and setting permissions on ur claim for example, palisade quest could make you build a palisade cornerpost and a visitor gate, maybe the quest log should explain the difference between visitor gates and regular gates

That'd definitely allow us to keep more of the steam players before they quit out of frustration

I'd argue that after the first initial quest your character is given, (craft Kuksa), should be to immediately unlock the skills needed for Yeomandry and then the quest.

Literally hand-hold the sprucecaps until they get a personal claim up.. Then the followon quest being the skills needed for a palisade, collect leather, and finally to make a palisade, and gates.

For good measure, a quest to create a key / lock for your gate. And then to create a slave key.

Good idea. I'm sure many remember when there were no quests at all, you were just dropped in the world and left on your own; then we got the beginner quests to make a kuska, etc.

Congratulations: You have your kuska
Stop all LP spend on all skills and attributes, save until you can buy yeomanry and all its predecessors > see wiki
DON'T PAVE
BE MULTIPLE GRIDS AWAY FROM ALL WATER
MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT NEAR ANYTHING USEFUL
IF ANOTHER PLAYER SEES YOU WALK AN HOUR AWAY FROM THEM
Make claim
DON'T EXPAND THE CLAIM UNTIL IT HARDENS
DON'T DUMP YOUR POINTS IN THE CLAIM
Set your watch for 8 hours, you can begin gathering hides then
Gather hides and begin drying them
Build a useless roundpole fence and lock it with a piece of wood
This fence will only stop the most opportune and least driven players
You can consider building a house to hide your tanning tubs but that might make it even more likely that someone destroys everything you've done so far (label this step optional)
Build 3 tanning tubs
Go to the wiki to figure out how to make tanning fluid, might as well look up the palisade recipe too, you won't know it until you pick up leather in game
Place the hides and the fluid together
Wait 30 real life hours
You are defenseless during this period
DON'T PAVE
DON'T BE SEEN AT ALL
But do chop down a dozen trees and turn them into piles of blocks
And gather a pile of LP to make a claim big enough to be "worth it"
Once the leather is done rush out and build the entire palisade
Gate orientation matters
All mistakes are going to be very painful
Be careful BUT BE VERY FAST
Congratulations, the piece of wood lock is magically invincible on these pieces of timber!
BUT
First the palisade must harden
If you failed in the claim stealth or failed at being lucky in this 8 hour window, your palisade will be hand bashed: begin walking for an hour and return to step one

Maybe Loftar could go whole hog and put down a ghost-image layout of an "airlock" with a locked hut and a tutorial on hideing and hearthing!

Here is 100 xp for a 72 hour quest! You are now relatively safe in this rectangle, if you step outside you are no longer safe at all!

Seems like that will do the trick, Ozzy! You solved it! No more atrocious Steam retention, and the game will finally experience the valheim-esque popularity it richly deserves! And without even having to address this insanely toxic entrenched HARDCORE gaming community! Anarchist wet dream territory, I know.

Doesn't it seem like twisting the experience into this narrow peephole of rushing a pali might not be that GOOD? Like maybe most people won't LIKE what this game is presenting as the CRITICAL PATH to being playable/safe for a noob?

From my casual perspective, it seems like maybe Jorb made all these birds and trees and animals to be looked at and enjoyed broadly. But then again, there are a couple dozen posters on this very forum that insist that this game can't change, PvP is the core experience, the noobs just need to know how to do this insanely timely, dare I say: unfun, quest chain to get started. What is it all for boys? Do you think they went through the steps of getting this project on Steam for it to remain unplayable for new audiences? They don't need new players? They need to cater to a handful of PRO players/forum posters?

I know it is an art project, I get that. So maybe this quote will help sum up the situation: "We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell."

This is something that can be added even now. No world reset needed.
It should also be easy to add.
The perfect patch, big impact low effort.
