Thieft is common here?

Hello everyone.
I think this thread is best for my topic, otherwise i beg my pardon.
I started playing this game recently, and a friend of mine, who left the game, left for me his house with a set of fields, etc. Among other items he left me a bear cape. Well the question is: i was plowing fields today, when suddenly a man appaered on my territory, and stole a cape from my(now) house.
1. I could not seen his name, all i seen was "???" Is it normal?
2. Are thieft is a common politics here, so i must consider better defences?

That's what happens if you don't have a claim or a palisade. Your stuff is a free-for-all if it's unprotected.

Technically, anything you don't have "nailed down" (in a claim) doesn't count as theft.

While you don't have any place to call your own, it would be advisable to hide your belongings in strange places, or make use of a leanto.

All useful stuff, except for raw food and some crops is in the house, and territory around the house is claimed.

Well< first of all i got no idea in what supergrid i'm situated. But if someone helps me, yes, that will be most welcome. Besides it's not about bear cape, it's just about that i'm pretty defenceless against thiefs, unless i build palisade?

yes. build palisade. you are pretty much defenseless without it, especially if you are unable to track scents, don't have theft and vandalism, and don't know how to fight.

damn, now somebody stole hens from my coop... People, how can i learn in what supergrid i'm situated, and if somebody needs a newbie farmer?

Find villages in your area and ask on the forum if anyone knows where they are. As for finding a group, that's what the Dwarves&Thieves forum is for.
