Re: Trade offer for big citys
The problem with gold and silver is that they don't offer a good enough resolution, and the problem with common metals is what the hell do I do with it?

Trade it for the things you want in the market. I think coins is just adding another pointless step to trading, and gold and silver coins just add more power to higher up villages, guess thats the point tho.Potjeh wrote:The problem with gold and silver is that they don't offer a good enough resolution, and the problem with common metals is what the hell do I do with it?

What I have against coins is that it's so much easier and beneficial to trade for items you need. Not to mention that the metal could go into other stuff.

No, coins are pretty nifty for stalls. If you're selling 15 different items and buying 15 different items good luck making enough barter stalls. If you use coins as a step between buying and selling goods, though, it can easily be done. But the problem is that you can't prevent introduction of coins from outside and end up buying metal instead of what you actually want.

Re: Trade offer for big citys
The problem is:
What would one major power have to offer that another doesn't already have, and they'd be wliling to trade?
Also, by making this available to more than just 'the major powers' you've already made it pretty much like what I've noticed of Buyan Market with a charterstone.
Seems pointless to me, why would we buy each other's jewelry? gold/silver? That's exactly what we all do, turn gold/silver INTO jewelry, there is no diversity in what endgame villages tend to raise... there's only jewelry for all of us, maybe those of us who no longer have a jeweler...

Re: Trade offer for big citys
Actually this will help to increase market.
Lets see... 60-70 people in game have top jewelry, other 600 not... and have almost no chance to do.
Also there is question about time... if you need something fast.. and you know its on market you can go and buy it.
If you worry about external income of silver, that is actually not problem. I spend so much of silver, I will easily transfer working power to other needs. Also Jewelry hq will be needed by everybody... At this moment I see no chance for simple person to buy monocle for linen or mussels...
They just couldn't put that much in inventory, so there is needed something between.
I don't think silver coins gives bad ranging in price. This market susposed to be HQ stuff, impossible to reach for 90% of hearthlings.
So silver coin is just good for it
We can use gold coin of course... if somebody have 40-50 bars of gold to put into marked changing it to silver or other stuff to start market working.

Why to melt them if you just can buy nugget for 10 coins...
Or you can buy gold nugget...
For gold nugget you will need to make a shitton of linen-blueberry-mussels... then you need to find person who gonna buy all that...
At market you just comming, selling all stuff, collecting coins, buying what you need for them...

Re: Trade offer for big citys
I am far from a world power of any sort and I'm doubtful that I'll receive an invitation to a closed market like this but I can see it working and working very well. The qualms lots of people have right now are that once you have the coins, what do you do with them? They want a resolution to the coins as stalls and vendors will not always have what you want and not everyone has a need for silver or gold. In other words, people want liquidity and having to hold onto coins for too long is detracting from their desirability, just like we see in real life currencies. Adding the ability to immediately exchange them for a universally valuable good (which shouldn't exist?) or goods (possible but difficult) would greatly increase their liquidity and the turnover rate at which coins exchange hands. I don't believe that step will actually be necessary but I'm also not well versed in global economics and how other people/cities value silver.
