Sorry to be OT, but I always hear this said, and it is absoluely untrue. I've used dowsing rods before, both apple branches cut fresh from a tree, and two metal rods bent at the ends to rest over your fingers. We had to find where to dig for some buried water lines, and it was the quickest most accurate way to do it, so my dad and grandfather taught me how. I was honestly shocked at how accurate it was. Right where the two rods cross over in your hands, dig down, and within an inch or two (not exaggerating) you'll find your pipe or spring or whatever you're digging for.

And it's perfectly plausible that it would work, since it's all about induction from the electrons in the metal rods, or the sap in the tree branch, and the salts flowing in the water underground. The "conman" bit comes from people claiming they've found water in drought affected areas where people are desperate for a well, since dowsing is obviously VERY easy to fake .
