Just a fast potential 'map update history' idea hack.
- Simple global world minimap, mapping uploaded maptile-age to some color idea.
- If 1 pixel is 1 map-tile, this image is 2 SG's. (full image would be 450x450 for the current 9x9 world SG's)
- (just use/picked some base colors, which don't really work that good with the simple animation fade effect that was used.)

That's actually the same 'lags', as you call it, as the earlier one, and it extends quite a bit downward too. If you look closely you can follow it. I haven't found the original source yet, and I kind of need to find that to prevent this from happening again. Until then, I have turned off processing, so you can indeed upload, but it will be put in the queue until I fix this mess.

That's a pretty nice idea, and would probably work. However, I counted today, and I have 4 different projects I do, besides havenmap, as well as my studies to keep up with. How much time I invest in each of these things sways a bit back and forth.
You could code it yourself however, if you want to, drop me a line on my jabber, and I'll give you my database schema. That should enable you to code it, and then I can run it over my database.
