Is there an easy way to place them? Or does every section need to be set down one by one

you build a cornerpost [the only thing you can build, then you build N/W/E/S wall sections from cornerposts. From wall sections you build N/S or W/E or cornerposts.

To add, only the first post has a high initial cost to deter griefing
